O'Dwyers is a contradiction. It has a good location, in fact a fantastic location, in the Heritage area of Wake Forest where there are no other casual sports bars. It has a good layout, a nice size, lots of TVs including a giant screen, nice big bar area, pretty much anything you would need in an easy neighborhood type bar. But the ownership/management was never solid and it showed. Lousy service, mediocre food, a rude owner who couldn't care less if you complained, and an arrogant little bartender who made you feel like you weren't even there. Thank god he's gone now. I mean the place has appeal especially when they bring in bands and karaoke and the atmosphere turns much more festive. It has recently changed owners and they have made some changes, not sure yet if they are all improvements, but changes. There are new tvs and some new decor. The service is now exclusively hot young women in tight little shorts and referee jerseys which, while I'm not really complaining, does kind of tart the place down a bit and removes the casual, approachable dynamic of the old staff. There is now a side door where there was none, and a seperate wet bar which I've never seen used except as a place to put your beer. One change that hasn't inspired me to frequent the place is the price increases. A domestic pint is now $2.50 where it used to be a dollar cheaper a year ago. The menu has changed but the food is still the same so-so bar fare. This place really really needs to revamp their kitchen and the quality of food it puts out. Service is also reliably slow; it's not uncommon to wait a half hour or more for a basket of wings. So in some ways it's got a new life but in others it's still the same old O'Dwyers. Not sure how invested the new owner is in increasing sales and improving service as I usually see him parked at his own bar with a pint. But as long as they have the game on and a good band on the weekends I'll go back, but spend less.
