Honolulu Dance Studio (HDS) began in 1986 with nine (9) elementary school girls directed by Cathy Izumi. They teamed together as a performing company (Honolulu Gurlz Dance Company) based at Danceworks Studio in Kaimuki. In 5 years the dance program expanded to include several Divisions—Keiki, Junior, Teen, Senior, Adult and Professional. The contemporary dance studio moved to the Waterfront Athletic Club in 1991, and in 1992 became the HDS and Honolulu Dance Company (HDCo.) of today. The Honolulu Dance Studio nurtures the process of perfection, persevering in dance excellence and persisting in purity of character .
