The use of a humidifier during the dry winter months will help avoid extreme fluctuations in the humidity and moisture in your home. Use a hygrometer to see what the relative humidity is in your rooms and try to keep it in the 40 - 50% range. Furniture located in over-heated rooms or near a heat source will sustain damage to the structure due to intense wood shrinkage. It is always good to at least minimize changes that result in dramatic wood movement over time by using a humidifier if need be.
