I was a witness in a family court/ custody case for which Dr. Pepper was chosen as the evaluating psychiatrist. His job was to interview the parents, children and significant others of the parents.
From the outset, Dr, Pepper showed a bias towards the mother. Reams of documentation were presented to show that she was negligent and attempting to alienate the father: Dr. Pepper ignored this and declined to ask the children any questions that might elicit a negative response towards the mother. She appeared with a boyfriend who she said she was going to marry and into whose house she'd recently moved her children; she moved out a year later and ended the relationship.
The mother outright lied about the actions of the father and his fiancee, and Dr. Pepper wrote the information in his court report as if it were fact. When later shown proof of the lies, he stated that he would clarify when the case went to trial. Too late, as the court has already read his error-filled report.
Dr. Pepper spent an hour meeting with the mother and the children together and fifteen minutes with the father.
The mother had a history of manipulation and Dr. Pepper was unable to see through it, or investigate beyond his pre-conceived notions of how the case should play out.
After the interviews, the children were confused and upset: they knew that they were not asked relevant questions and saw that their mother was manipulating the situation. They mistakenly thought Dr. Pepper was an objective observer.
I will note that since this took place, the family situation has subsequently evolved to the benefit of the children and with the father having custody. The Court was fortunately able to see the reality of the situation despite Dr. Peppers egregious handling of the interviews.
He should not be sought for any court-ordered consultation and I can't imagine him being an effective counselor in any regard. He has pre-determined ideas of who people are and how family dynamics should be, based on his very limited world-view.
