Assurance of a child's safety is a minimal quality standard of a daycare. My 3 years-old daughter and our family have suffered great pains in last several months caused by teacher’s negligence in Westminster Child Care Center (WCCC). My daughter’s fingernail has been torn off with exposure of the nail bed. However, the Injury Report described my daughter as having been “playing and accidentally tripped on sidewalk.” The injury was, “left middle hand/finger hurt,” and the first aid was, “TLC, wet paper towel and band-aid”. We haven’t received any notification from Westminster about this injury before we saw our daughter. Our daughter didn’t let us to check her injured finger until she fell asleep. We cut off the two Band-Aids, which had been put over the end of her finger by her teachers. We were shocked by what we saw: more than half of the left 3rd had been torn away.
Ten days after my daughter’s injury, Director told us (1): The reason for the injury was, “no more severe than a falling down” (2): The reason for our not being notified immediately was that the teacher had done the treatment, “so it was not worthy of a phone call.” (3): The reason for the failure to apply antibiotic treatment was simply that the “teachers have been trained.” (4): As to why no mention was made in the Injury Report of the severity of the injury to my daughter’s finger, no direct answer was given.
It was apparent to us once we saw the injury that it was severe and that was confirmed by hospital visits. Until that moment, we have received no words of concern from the director about my daughter or her recovery. Then I had to let my daughter leave WCCC.
More than half year past since this incident, whenever I see my daughter’s little finger, I feel sorry for the pain she had suffered. The life-long lesson learned from this injury is to carefully choose daycare/school at her every step…
