OK, so you want pizza. You have maybe a dollar or two. We can argue all day about who makes the best pizza, whether it should have goat cheese or just mozzarella, but you should just head to Haymarket and get a slice or two. You can feed yourself for your couple of dollars and you'll love it.
The pizza is cheap and has a terrific crust. As you add toppings, the price per slice goes up - still under $2 for a huge piece. A whole cheese pizza is still about $5.
But the thing about Haymarket Pizza is the atmosphere. It is in Haymarket. You step up to the counter, which is often jammed, and get your food. You then find a ratty old stool to sit on - or, if the weather is decent and the Haymarket produce market isn't open (Friday and Saturday), you stand outside at some old counters supported by saw horses. There you share your meal with attorneys in fancy suits and construction workers in overalls. You drop some crumbs to the pigeons. You watch the halal meat market get a delivery of goats - I'm not kidding. During Haymarket days, you can fight through the crowds and step into the suddenly calm oasis and enjoy a slice while watching the throngs push past. It's a real scene.
