Yes Organic Market

Even though there's another new-agey vegetarian pill store on Pennsylvania on the other side of the street it's great that Yes! came to the Hill. Finally, we're worthy of the upmarket shops! They pretty much have everything you could want including devices for irrigating your nasal passages. Organic Milk. Lots of prefab food, meaning things in boxes that I haven't tried. You'll have to go to Bethesda Coop for your grains and spices. But let's try to support our local grocer. Bonus** Last winter, at least, they were open even in the depths of severe snow storm. The manager seemed a little sadistic when he was firing someone for not showing up. (Hey guy! Fire people in private! And don't be such a grinch! it was snowing a lot that day) But generally they seem to be pretty nice. Sweet to the kids and stuff. more

One of three markets in the Yes! chain of organic markets in DC, the eastern market store caters to the quick meal crowd. Although the aisles are small and things can get a little tight during the after work hours, Yes! has everything the DC veggie needs for a healthy meal. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about where to find all your needs in the well-packed and -stocked store. Although it isn't Whole Foods, Yes! offers a wide variety in a small space and is conveniently located just a few steps away from Eastern Market. Of course, be prepared to pay a premium. Unfortunately, organic food still costs quite a bit more than what you find at your neighborhood grocery store, but it makes up for it in flavor! The only hesitation I have with Yes! is the produce, but that is only due to the fact that you are two blocks from Eastern Market, where fresh produce, meat, and dairy products can be found year round. Without a doubt, Yes! is the best organic store on the Hill - they also offer a great variety of wines! more

With Eastern Market just a block away, buying fresh foods from Yes Organic Market is not terribly enticing. But they do have a decent variety, especially considering how little the Capitol Hill area has little to offer in terms of grocery shopping. It's not on the same level as Whole Foods, but it's better than nothing. For fruits and veggies, though, Eastern Market is still a better bet and a two-minute walk away. more
