Worst

Steak was very solid but not anywhere near spectacular i.e. worth the heavy price we paid for it. 2 people (entree, drinks) cost 185. Ridiculous.

This place certainly didn't blow my mind. While the waiting staff was very friendly, the food took forever to come out and each person got their dish at separate times. The prices were outrageous. Not great value here. more

Simply awful dining experience and overpriced to boot! 6/10/2009

Let me start by saying that this is the first negative review I've ever written about a restaurant, and we eat out a few times a week. To start, while our waiter was very nice and accommodating (the one positive of the evening), there was a huge language barrier and he was unable to understand/answer some of our questions about the menu. My crab cake appetizer was just OK, while the crab cocktail appetizer my boyfriend ordered was much better. For our side (a la carte), I asked if the chef could prepare sauteed spinach, as opposed to the creamed spinach on the menu. I was told he could not, as it was prepared ahead of time. This seemed odd until I tasted it - the mushy texture made it clear it had been sitting around for a while. We left this uneaten. I ordered the lamb chop for my entree. Let me just say that I eat a lot of lamb, and this was -- hands down -- the absolute worst lamb I have ever had both in quality of cut and flavor. It came in three mangled pieces, each so tough and loaded with both fat and bone, I literally could not find more than one bite of meat to eat. The one piece I did taste was completely bland in flavor. I promptly sent it back and our waiter suggested I order the fillet instead. The medium rare fillet took so long to arrive, that my boyfriend was done with his meal by the time it arrived (I told him to go ahead and eat so his meal didn't get cold). This kind of defeats the purpose of dining together. Side note: he qualified his sirloin as ""mediocre at best."" Not wanting to eat solo, I had my fillet wrapped to go. The manager made no apologies and we were given our bill in full, which totaled an astonishing $245 pre-tip for two people (including drinks) Obviously, I would never return to this establishment. There are far too many other high quality Westchester restaurants that sweep the floor with this in both price and food quality. Save your money. Cons: Everything more

Not worth it... 12/6/2008

Sadly disappointed. The waiters hovered and kept rushing us, steaks were way too rare (not what we asked for) and food was way overpriced... more

Truely Toll Worthy 11/15/2008

Last night was the first night I have been there since the new management has taken over and I must say that the reputation of a Peter Lugers with out the 2 hour drive is well deserved. The presentation of steak as well as the quality ( which is now understood, after speaking to the manager, both Peter Lugers and Tollgate purchase from the same purveyor) The ambiance aspect that has been reviewed in the past as turn of the century has been over come by a new entrance as well as a fantastic new bar area. We enjoyed being able to sit and have a drink before and after our meal. Highly recommended was the new dessert menu, and lived up to the hype. Great steak, new atmosphere and location make this place well worth a visit. Pros: great steak, new face Cons: a little loud more

Tollgate Steakhose - not worth the toll! 11/1/2008

I took my family to Tollgate Steakhouse last night after reading the reviews on Citysearch. I have to say that I was very disappointed. I am generally an optimist and always find the best in any bad situation, but in the case of Tollgate Steakhouse, there is none. I heard as we were leaving from the hostess that the place is under new management, so that can explain my obviously different review than what's been posted here previously. Pros: Decent wine list Cons: Noisy, poor quality food more

""Westchester's Best Kept Secret"" 4/23/2006

A group of co-workers and I recently made the trip from Stamford CT down to the Tollgate in Mamaroneck...Boy, was it worth the trip...The Portehouse's were excellent, great wine list , all the traditional steakhouse side dishes were perfect, and how can I forget, the service and atmosphere made us feel very comfortable...Great place for an excellent steak...No frills, No attitude, just a very enjoyable night out... Pros: Wine List, Portehouse, Service more

""Best Beef on the Market"" 3/12/2006

It's not to often that you can come across a great piece of ""prime"" beef...The quality at the Tollgate is incredible...It's amazing how consistent this steakhouse is...The filet mignon is always so tender, the porterhouse steak is always like butter, the spinach, the potatoes, service, EVERYTHING is just fantastic.. I always feel very comfortable, always enjoy my meal, and always enjoy the service.. This is great place for a Guy's night out , a long lunch, or after a long 18 holes of golf...Again, the quality doesn't get any better, definitely NYC quality in the ""burbs"".... Pros: Porterhouse Steak, Service, Wine List Cons: My Diet, My wasteline, My figure more

"" A Real Steakhouse"" 12/28/2005

The Tollgate is a classic NYC steakhouse w/ NYC quality serving succulent slabs of ""prime beef"" and excellent side dishes.By far, the "" Best Steak in Westchester""....Plus, a great wine list to compliment the great food....The ""old world style"" and "" very friendly service"" keeps the customers always coming back for more... Pros: Porterhouse, Wine List, Service more

Best Steak In Town 12/16/2005

Perfect atmosphere for a group dinner. From the hearty appetizers, to the delicious poterhouse for 6, cooked to perfection, and accompanied by the traditional steakhouse sides(which I took an extra hasbrown home they were so good). A broad selection of wine, and impeccable service from our waiter Dominick, makes this a place I will frequent often. Pros: food, wine, atmosphere more

NYC Quality in Mamaroneck... 10/25/2005

I've been going to the Tollgate for perhaps the last 7-8 years and the I can honestly say I have yet to have a bad meal..The atmosphere is very comfortable , sometimes very loud, but that's why I love it..The steaks , side dishes , and desserts all speak for themselves...The service is always excellent and at times very very entertaining....It doesn't get much better than this.... Pros: Porterhouse Steaks, Wine List, Service Cons: Noise Level more

Outstanding steak in Westchester 9/23/2005

The Tollgate is a no nonsense steakhouse....No trends just beef...I recently had a great time with friends sharing the ""signature"" steak for four with all the trimmings...Homefries ,spinach , and buttered mushrooms...It's refreshing to find such GOOD quality outside the city....Food and service, it doesn't get much better....Oh yes, most importantly plenty of BANG for your BUCK!!!!!! Pros: Service, Porterhouse Steak, side dishes more

THE BEST!!!! 9/12/2005

Family owned and managed... Warm friendly staff... Very accommodating... cozy dinning....Party room upstairs... Vallet parking on the weekends. You must try the sizzling bacon over the Caesar Salad. The Porterhouse for two is the best. Very impressive wine list. I was very pleased with the service and the food. A must try....two thumbs up!!!! Pros: friendly staff, great steak, wine list more

Best Steak In Westchester 9/8/2005

When a friend told me The Tollgate was "" Peter Luger's without the attitude"" i couldn't believe it, I had to see for myself.....WOW, I'm happy I did!! From the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out everything was perfect..But let's talk about the main importance, THE BEEF....My wife and I shared the porterhouse for two which was PHENOMENIAL, the cream spinach and homefries were EXCELLENT and then were the desserts....However it was crowded but from soup to nuts it doesn't get much better..... Pros: Porterhouse steak, Service , Side Dishes Cons: Crowded more

Juicy & Tender Portherhouse!!! 9/8/2005

I was very pleased with the service and the food at Tollgate. The Porterhouse was the best I've had. The sizzling bacon, cream spinach, home potatoes were so yummy. I will definitely patronize Tollgate on a regular basis. New York traditional cooking at its finest. Pros: Porterhouse Steak, Sizzling Bacon, Cream Spinach more

O.k. but not worth the price 7/18/2005

I guess the options are small in the steakhouse realm in Westchester, but this wasn't great. Granted it was a couple years ago, but from the other review it sounds like it is the same. We had an o.k. dinner, but to charge those prices it needs to be great. The portions on the side dishes were good. The acoustics in the restaurant weren't great either. There was a loud party in the same room and it was deafening. I would save your money and go into NYC for a good steak dinner! Service was o.k. Pros: Side Dish Portions Cons: Expensive more

yuk 4/2/2004

we went on valentines day and i have ti say if it wasnt v-day i wouldve said something- the meat was verrrrrrry fatty overpriced and they sat us in this horrible spot- we asked to move and eventually did but it was the worst steak i ever had- the surf and turf was wayyyyy overpriced for what you actually get- also the steak was burnt! (not the way i ordered- i would never recommend this to anyone! stay away! Cons: , price, seating more

Great Steaks 3/9/2003

This restaurant is a great place for your steak. We had a private room upstairs for 16 people ad it was great. Succulent shrimp for appetizers, a huge 4 person porterhouse, creamed spinach, sauteed mushrooms and hash browns. It all hit the spot and at a decent price too. Parking can be a pain but it well worth it. more

Good Steak in Westchester. 11/12/2002

A Peter Luger imitation, which slightly lacks Luger's quality. I'd rather go to Flames when I'm in Westchester: the steak, apps and décor are much better (Flames is even better than Luger's). Pros: Wine List, Creamed Spinach Cons: Stuffy Inside more
