My first time to CA and my husband's maiden return after 9 years. To sum it up...poor service, horrible food, over priced, below quality sushi. I love sushi and expected better ...

Cheap sushi on the promenade 8/13/2008

I always stop at Yangtze whenever I'm at the 3rd st. promenade. If you sit at the sushi bar, most rolls are half price. Every tastes great and the staff is very attentive. more

I have been there with a Sushi-maven and in his opinion the fish was Pros: Food, service Cons: Ambience, decoration more

OK sushi for people who don't know any better 11/21/2007

A few weeks ago my fiance & I were looking for a quick bite before a movie and decided to give this place a try -- we figured it couldn't be that bad if they got an ""A"" grade and we were really in the mood for sushi. This place is huge -- we walked past the front outdoor patio and then thru the main dining area before being led to another eating area and then the far-back sushi bar (we later learned that sushi is 1/2 off when you eat at the sushi bar and good thing we did cos it totally was not worth full price). The fish was fresh but certainly far from the most buttery, flavorful sushi i've had -- the albacore nigiri was pretty tasteless and looked really boring -- no scallions, no nothing to make it look somewhat artful. The rainbow roll and shrimp tempura rolls were OK but nothing to write home about. I think what i remember most about that place is the customers next to us who kept sucking on their teeth -- when the clientele is gross, it kinda ruins the whole experience. Needless to say, we won't be back. Pros: Located on the Promenade Cons: Pretty much everything else more

This place has went downhill... 11/6/2007

I live four blocks from Yangtze and work less than 2 miles away. Yangtze used to be my favorite sushi spot and I ordered food from there at least 3 to 4 times a week, but I don't think I will ever eat there again. I ordered food online for lunch one day for myself and some coworkers. After an hour and a half when it did not arrive, I called and was told the food was on its way. After another 30 minutes with no delivery, I called again and was told again my food was on its way. This time I asked for the manager because that wasn't possible since my office is less than a 10 minute drive from the restaurant. When the manager got on the phone, he told me they never received our order because the fax machine was broken. This is after I had been told twice that it was on its way! By now, the whole office is hungry. After I told the manager what happened, he did not offer anything except to redo our order. It was ridiculous! Instead of apologizing and giving us the food for free as any respectable restaurant would do after such a mishap on their part, he sent the delivery guy over with two free 50cent sodas. I can't believe this is how they would treat someone who is such a loyal customer to them. Pros: Cheap sushi, friendly delivery guy Cons: Bad service, horrible management more

Good for Promenade People Viewing - Can they charge for that? 6/10/2007

My first time to CA and my husband's maiden return after 9 years. To sum it up...poor service, horrible food, over priced, below quality sushi. I love sushi and expected better from a coastal area. I also expected better prices than what we pay for it in Chicago. Boy, was I disappointed! My husband had the basil chicken. Is this dish REALLY supposed to be sweet? We've never had it on the sweeter side of the palette before, so that was a disappointment! more

DON'T BOTHER. SHODDY SERVICE, ZERO AMBIENCE, MEDIOCRE FOOD. 5/27/2007

I signed up for Citysearch just so I could express my frustration with Yangtze. Despite living a block away, we have determined never to return. What bothers me most is not the horrible service itself, but rather how unapologetic everybody who works there is about the horrible service. ""Only one guy back there,"" we were told after waiting a half hour for sushi rolls that were not in fact the rolls we ordered. (The restaurant was virtually empty.) Another time, a busboy piled too many plates onto his arms, and spilled soy sauce over my dress, there was no attempt to make amends; he didn't even seem sorry. Pros: Kinda cheap, but not as cheap as it should be. Location. Cons: FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIENCE. more

Nice presentation, Crappy service, Ho-hum food 12/25/2006

So my wife and I decided to go out for Christmas; we're remodeling so it was a good idea to get out. We headed out to Santa Monica to walk on the beach for a little, and decided to stop by this little restaurant that we've heard some decent things about. Pros: Location, patio Cons: Aweful service, mediocre food, very awkward hallway to restroom more

Asian fusion with decent sushi, good Chinese, and so-so Thai 11/5/2006

Although most seem to be focusing on Yangtze as a sushi bar, it's more of an Asian fusion mix than that. I've been eating here for years, moreso for their Chinese food than their sushi, though they have Thai dishes as well (their pad thai wasn't as good as other places). Sitting outside on the Promenade is great for people watching while sitting in the back gets you half-priced sushi (I've had a blast doing sake bombs with groups back there). Their dumplings are pretty good and their sushi rolls are better than their nigiri. The prices are overall reasonable and I'd definitely go back for more of everything! more

Public service announcement: half price sushi in the back of the restaurant 11/5/2006

If you sit in the back, where the sushi chef is, sushi will cost you half as much as if you sit in the front (where you get to people watch on 3rd street). It's just OK sushi, but great price. more

Ordering and food fine for me 8/9/2006

I have ordered several times from Yangzte using the online menu thing and had no problems. The food arrived hot - and within 45 minutes as advertised. Someone did call to confirm my order, but frankly that seems like a good idea and not an annoyance. The food is excellent, and I, for one, will continue ordering from Yangtze. Pros: Good food, arrived hot and on time as advertised after ordering online Cons: none so far more

Poor customer service... 8/3/2006

The mixed variety of oriental menu in Yangtze Restaurant was great. The Thai pork BBQ was especially tasty. The ambiance was decent, definitely not romantic though and the prices were reasonable. However if you're looking for great customer service then THIS IS NOT THE RESTAURANT or PLACE FOR YOU. The server we had was unsociable and inattentive. She took the order wrong and did not even try to rectify the mistake, nor did she gave us an option to resolve the problem. Yangtze provides good food but offers TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE... Pros: Variety of oriental menu (Thai, Korean, Japanese Cons: Very poor customer service...unattentive and unsociable servers more

Don't bother ordering online. 5/19/2006

Although the online ordering is simple, if you don't get a phone call confirming it from the restaurant within 15 minutes, you're to call them. Save yourself the time and just phone in your delivery order. I've ordered 2x online, first time not knowing the call back rule. Waited an hour before I followed up, then another 25 for the order. 2nd time, I also had to call, but waited the full 15 minutes for confirmation. The food, is just mediocre, but having sushi delivered is a bonus. Pros: sushi delivered Cons: online ordering more

Excellent food-Great Service 4/25/2006

Our dinner for three last week couldn't have been better. The potstickers, Chinese Chicken Salad, Mu Shu, and particularly the Blazing Noodles surpassed expectations. Waitstaff was helpful and prompt. A fabulous before or after movie spot with something for everyone. more

Okay food... 2/5/2006

the food here is good, but not great. if you absolutely need to have asian food on the promenade, then, go there. if you can drive to hollywood for thai, san gabriel for chinese... i would do that. the prices are very good though. Pros: price, location Cons: so-so food more

Not bad 11/24/2005

The food is ok, but I think its worth it to drive somewhere else. For the same price you can definitely find better food. more

Adequate but not worth a return visit 8/31/2005

The bao appetizer was quite good, as was the Thai selection my friend had. However, my chicken was overcooked to the point of toughness, and the service was only passable. Maybe it was an off day, maybe I ordered the weak dish on the menu, but I don't think I'd give Yangtze another try. more
