From the outside this restaurant looks a bit like an unambitious sandwich shop in a busy part of town, relying on convenient location to bring in the clientele. A few outdoor tables and an underwhelming interior.
Fortunately this boring surface disguishes some truly outstanding food and a prompt, courteous wait staff that could easily support a much more upscale environment. I recommend the grilled vegetable tostada - which is delicious with the frying sauces and the light dusting of cinnamon on a feathery crisp shell bowl complete with crunchy jicama bits and the slight tang of mango woven throughout. Impressive. In fact, this little restaurant's food far outshines it's parent, El Portale.
Pros: delicious food, great service, fast kitchen
Cons: ho-hum 1st impression
