DO NOT RENT FROM WYLIE HOLDINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the misfortune of living in two apartments owned by Wylie Holdings. The first apartment was on Butler Street. My wife and I moved in to help her brother with the rent. It was an ""as is"" rental where we had the freedom of renovating as we saw fit. Well when we moved in the apartment had wall to wall carpeting that at one time was white. When we got there is was ruined by the previous tenants who aparently had multiple pets and kids. Joe Edelstein (an Ex-Con who manages Wylie Holdings) informed us that there was hardwood floors under the carpeting. After removing the old carpeting we found out that is was anything but the truth. There was wood under the carpet but not the kind you can sand and stain to have hardwood floors. While at the Butler street apt, our oven and refridgerator both broke and Wylie said they were not responsible for these appliances! There were no screens for the windows. The basment had a board instead of a door where mice and wild cats had no problem entering, so in the summer there was a stench of cat urine and dead mice littered the basment floor. Also mice were living throughout the building. Our neighbor said she called about the infestation and they told her it was not their problem. She ended up getting a cat to keep the mice away. Well when our rent was up we were short on money and didn't have enough time to find a new place. The one nice thing Wylie Holdings did for us was help us move to another one of their apartments on Penn Ave on the border of Garfield and Lawrenceville and let us make payments for a month til we were caught up. When Joe showed us this new apartment in the morning on a week day he informed us that it was a nice neighborhood and that we'd have no problem parking on the street. It didn't take long for us to find out that both of those statments were lies. We were constantly harassed by the other people living on the street. My wife was called a cracker on multiple occasions and people would spit on our car and try to break into it. I almost got into a fight one time when I parked on the street because a guy ran out and said ""You can't park there, thats my baby momma's spot."" As Joe showed us the place the front door jam was broken from people kicking the door in, which he said he'd have someone fix shortly. When we moved out a year later the door was still not fixed. He also told us he would have the apt painted and cleaned before we moved in, niether of which happened. When we first walked in the floors were filthy, there was unpainted plaster covering holes on the wall, nails and tape where still on the walls from the previous tenant, and there were stains and dirt stuck on the flat paint they used on the walls! Instead of them cleaning, they sprayed some sort of solution on the concrete floors and that was it. We spent our first week cleaning the floors, bathroom, half kitchen, and tried to clean the walls. By the end of 2 years renting with Wylie Holdings we had enough and moved to a bigger cheaper place with a nice landlord. When we moved we thoroughly cleaned the apartment and the only thing that was wrong with the place was the dirty walls that should have been painted before we moved in. Just when we thought we were done with these Slum-Lords they tried to screw us over one last time by sending us a bill instead of giving us our deposits back! We couldn't believe it! We left that place in better condition then when we moved in, but now they are trying to make us pay them to paint the apartment that they said they were going to paint before we moved in! They are also trying to charge us for cleaning the bathroom, general cleaning, and for a furnace filter!!! There was no furnace filter when we moved in!! We had to go buy one ourselves and only ran the furnace for four months. DO NOT RENT FROM WYLIE HOLDINGS!!!!!!!!! They are criminals, con-artists, and slum-lords. more

Slapped Together Tenement Property 5/17/2010

My girlfriend and I rented a Wylie Holdings apartment at 4521 Butler Street. We were residents of the apartment for one year between 2007 and 2008. We were initially charmed by the location of the place. Butler street has many nice shops/bars/etc. And there was a Giant Eagle within walking distance. The charm quickly wore off, however. Our first night in the apartment had our sleep interrupted often by ""Yellow"" and ""Sonoco"" trucks barreling down Butler Street. There is a hub for both of these companies further down Butler Street. To make matters worse, the traffic lights turn to blinking yellows around midnight, so these 18-wheeled behemoths thunder through the intersections at 40mph+ all night. Not exactly Wylie's Fault, but food for thought before considering living on Butler Street. Once winter rolled around, we realized how ramshackle this dwelling was assembled. There were two large windows in the living room/kitchen. I have a video of a candle burning next to the window. The smoke from the candle is blowing -SIDEWAYS- into the apartment due to the draft from the poorly fitted windows. Our gas bill hovered between $180 and $200 per month. Way out of line for the small 2 room apartment this was. As a note, my girlfriend works in an ice skating rink. So we are accustomed to cold temperatures and never set our thermostat above 65 degrees. Our neighbor moved out about 6 months after we moved in. A cleaning crew came and the space advertised to us as a ""shared closet"" suddenly became a ""fire escape"" when the cleaning crew stole each and every possession we had stored in there. No help from management either in recovering our belongings or being compensated. Speaking of the fire escapes on this building, I'd take my chances with the flames. The fire escape structure that services the rear of the building could not even be trusted to structurally support some flower pots. Let alone panicked stomping fire evacuees. And as if that was not enough. Once one got to the bottom of the fire escape a 12 foot drop to a concrete parking lot awaited you. (the retractable stairs that are normally a fixture of functioning fire escapes had been removed). Imagine a pregnant woman trying to negotiate this situation. Wylie Holdings is a large company with a lot of property. I'm sure some of them are pretty nice. This one at 4521 Butler Street was not. I give them a rating of 1 star ""Eh"" because that is the response I received from our building manager while trying to recover our stolen possessions. Pros: Convient walkable neighborhood location Cons: fit/finish and quality of dwelling more
