World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms - go grow something 5/2/2006

Love organic food and have some time to work the land on an organic farm? Check out WWOOF. It's a volunteer organization started in Europe more than 30 years ago and has grown to several countries. The United States operation lists more than 300 organic farms. What it does: facilitates volunteers to help out on farms. You don't need to have experience but want to get some dirt under your nails. Volunteers come from the city, are professionals, teachers, seniors, students (over the age of 18, please) and work the land in exchange for food and accomodations. The participating farms grow organic fruits, nuts and vegetables, as well as flowers and plants. These farms are committed to growing food without conventional pesticides--a good thing. I try and buy organic whenever I can and have visited some of these smaller farms in upstate NY or at the farmers market. more
