Home of the Long Running Show 4/23/2006

A production should feel very lucky to be at the Winter Garden - it seems like it only hosts long running shows! This is of course due to two of its most recent tenants - Cats & Mamma Mia!, two of the longest running musicals in the history of the Great White Way. The Winter Garden is huge (lots of seats for lots of fans). Front mezzanine seats are my favorites here. The stage door is on 7th Avenue - find your favorite chorus member after the show and let them know how much you loved his/her dance numbers. more

It's Not Just About Cats 1/16/2006

A NYC landmark, the Winter Garden Theatre is one of the many places in the city to take in a show. Known best for the long running musical Cats, the Winter Garden Theatre has also seen productions of West Side Story, Follies, and Funny Girl. Currently, Mamma Mia!, a musical based on hits by Swedish ABBA, is enjoying a five year run from its opening night in 2001. With about 1,600 seats available to the public and a thrust stage, the Winter Garden Theatre is a great place to take in a show. more

Owner Message
  • The Winter Garden Theatre occupies the second American Horse Exchange, built by William K. Vanderbilt in 1896, when Longacre (now Times) Square was the center of the horse and carriage trade. By 1911, when the Shubert Organization leased the Exchange, legitimate stage was making inroads north of 42nd Street. Notable productions at the Winter Garden Theatre include West Side Story, Funny Girl, and Cats.

Editorial
  • The theater was built by the Shuberts in 1911 as a venue for vaudeville. Al Jolson performed here at the height of his popularity. In its history, the theater was the home to "West Side Story,"...
