Winchester Mystery House

If you're new in San Jose or even if you've lived there your whole life the Winchester Mystery House is something to check out at least once in your life, I know i did =) Often times peoeple will see signs on the 101 advertising it but never go because they don't know what it is. It is an old house built by an old lady from the Winchester family who was quite eccentric. She built weird stairs, weird corners, etc. It is quite fun for kids young and old to go and check it out. They even have night tours which can be quite spooky especially if you go on Halloween or Friday the 13th. more

This odd enigma of a home is an interesting tourist attraction, with a structure that's as fascinating as it is strange. There are stairways that contain two-inch high steps, and doorways that open into blank walls. A deterrent for the overly-ambitious do-it-yourself home renovators in the crowd. A unique exploratory experience. more

This is the kind of place that would be neat and interesting and unusual everywhere, but even more so smack dab in the middle of San Jose. Surrounded by strip malls and a movie theatre this grand house is the last hting you'd expect to see on the outside, but it is even more so on the inside! The WInchester Firearms heiress who built the house believed that if she did not lalways have construction going on it she would suffer a terrible fate. So the house is full of bizarre nooks and crannies, staircases that go nowhere, hidden rooms and other bizarre things. There are many tours of the house and they are all worth taking. Especially fun are the mystery themed tours they do at Halloween. Give yourself a treat and try this place out! more

The Winchester Mystery House was built by the heiress to the Winchester gun fortune back in the 1800s. She was a huge nut and thought she was haunted by the crazy spirits of all the victims and people killed by Winchester rifles. So she spent all this money to build this wacko house that has stairs leading up to nowhere, doors that open to brick walls or to thin air (beware of the drop!). The house is really crazy and quite cheesy. Today it is a tourist attraction where anyone can pay their $16 and tour the house. There are guided tours that last about 1 hr. as well as a more expensive night tour (they call them "flashlight tours") that happen once every other week. more

Winchester Mystery House is a very large house that contains many weird things. Some also believe it is haunted; however, don't be fooled. Although this is a nice place to visit, it does not meet its reputation for being terrifyingly scary. On my tour at the Winchester Mystery house, aside from some weird attractions such as the stairs that lead to the ceiling, I did not see anything that would suggest the place to be haunted or scary for that matter. It's a nice place to have fun, especially on Halloween because they hold events that are quite enjoyable. If you have the time, I suggest stopping by and finding out for yourself. more

When I first moved out here and I visited the Valley Fair mall people would always talk about the 'famous' Winchester Mystery house. I heard stories of such an elaborate house built by the wealthy Winchester family's deranged daughter who thought she was being haunted by ghosts. As a fan of the supernatural, I figured I should pay my respects and see the fascinating architecture. When I went there I was little more than amused. My tour guide wasnt very enthusiastic and so I wasnt as interested in the house as I should have been. I think it was neat, but I wouldnt say I was in awe. If you do go to satisfy your curiousity, I would highly recommend not going to the 'behind the scenes' tour. It definitely wasnt worth the money. more

Located in San Jose/Santa Clara not far from the nearly renovated shopping area of Santana Row, the Winchester Mystery House is a throw back to olden times. Built as a penance by a Mrs. Winchester (yes, she of the Winchester rifle fame) , the rambling design of the house was supposed to have been dictated to Mrs. Winchester by numerous ghosts of the people who had been killed by her namesake rifle. It is said that the house is still haunted. Full of hidden rooms, a staircase that leads nowhere, and even door that open into the void, the house is bizarre to say the least. The staff also gives a spooky tour on Halloween that is quite exciting. more

Winchester Mystery House is super big and super scary! The tour is amazing (but a little overpriced). Don't wander off though, you will get lost, since there are over 300 different rooms. This is a cool place to go to on Halloween. If you're in the South Bay, definitely visit this place sometime! It is a truly terrifying place, and everyone that I know that has been there has loved it and some even came back a second time! more
