Very helpful - even with calls out of the blue 7/5/2012

I have gone to Wild Bird Garden back when they were on RT 40 and happened upon it again at its new location a couple of months ago on Buckeystown Pike. When I wandered in a few months ago, and I had a conversation about bat houses and bats, as I was taking a look at the bat houses they have. Today, I found a bat on my deck, and not sure how to really handle the situation, I called the Wild Bird Garden to see if they minded giving me some advice, as I remembered my conversation with Harvey. Thanks Wild Bird Garden for being willing to give what guidance you could, as to when a bat shows up out of the blue. Also your products and customer service are great. more

Kids Welcome Since 1990 10/8/2011

I am the owner of the Wild Bird Garden and I have been encouraged by several loyal customers, many with small children, to respond to the comments posted on June 30, 2011. Since 1990, I suspect that thousands of kids have accompanied their parents/grandparents to this store. I am quite confident that they will continue to visit this store for many years to come. Most responsible parents entering the store scope out the scene and immediately realize that with hand-blown glass and unique fragile items, they won't let their kids roam about. This was not the case for this customer. As a business owner, I would be recklessly irresponsible to condone very young children wandering about the store out of sight of their parents. Finally, to the customer with the June 30th posting, I never thought your kids were "unruly or rowdy" and contrary to your claim, your kids' behavior was never disturbing to me. However, I was irritated by your behavior. I found it surprising that I had to ask you 3-4 times to keep your young children by your side. I was genuinely concerned for your children's safety and for the store's fragile merchandise. You demonstrated total indifference to my request and I finally suggested that if you were unwilling to keep your young kids near your side, maybe you should leave. Having said all that, you and your 3 children are welcome back any time, just keep them by your side like most of my customers have done for the past 21 years. more

Kids are not welcome 6/30/2011

My first visit to their new store was very pleasant. A woman who works p/t sold us a hummingbird feeder. She also kindly allowed my 3 kids to use the restroom. The second time I went w/ intentions of purchasing a hanger for the feeder. I am not exaggerating when I say that within 5 minutes the owner spoke about my kid's behavior at least 4 times. He said they're not allowed to touch anything b/c a number of kids have been cut/hurt. I will be the first to say that, yes, my children ages 4, 6 and 8 can be a bit unruly at times. I agreed w/ him and made sure that my kids stopped handling the fragile items they've throughout the store. My kids surprisingly listened the first time around but were still moving about as highly active children tend to do. His 4th comment included that "parents tend to blame him if their kids get hurt." I assured him that I would not do that and that if my kids were to break anything I would certanily pay for it. At this point it was clear to me that we were not welcome, so I calmy replied that I'd not bring my children back to his shop. At that point it only went down hill. He said something to the effect that I was not supervising my kids and that he'd always done a much better job w/ his own. I told him I found his words offensive. His reply was that I was being sensitive. I also mentioned that while in VA we frequented the Wild Bird Center w/out incident. He told me to "go back to Burke" and referring to our exchange of words "go ahead and tell everyone you know." All parents know how challenging it can be to shop w/ young ones, esp. 3 at a time. Most shop owners find a more respectful, kind way to deal w/ rowdy young ones . My kids were not way out of line simply active. They harmed nothing while in the store and disturbed no one but the owner, as at the time the only other customer was loading her car. I am not thin skinned. His condescending behavior just really took me aback. It's a lose-lose situation. He lost a good customer, I have to go back to ordering bird supplies online. more

After having difficulty finding the location, I've been buying there frequently since. Pleased that the owner is concerned about only selling peanut products from reputable dealers. Young lady there on recent weekend spent much time helping me find best of squirrel thwarting shields for my feeders.Good dedicated people. Eileen Tragert Braddock Heights, MD. more
