Best Vet Around 2/17/2011

Wessels Animal Hospital in Taunton is a well respected and up to date facility that I have been going to for years. I could not disagree more with the 2 posts (same person) who resorts to name calling to make a point. The building is indeed old - over 100 years during which time it has ALWAYS been a vetrinary hospital. I think that alone speaks volumes. The inside is always neat and tidy and has been renovated 3 or 4 times in the 20 years I've been going there. The exam rooms are the same size as other vets I've been to, with enough room to accomodate the vet, patient, and a few family members. \r Doc does restrain all dogs - not just pit bulls. Tying the animal to the table stops them from being terrified when it moves (goes up and down to avoid lifting). And a muzzle is used to prevent a bite when the animal is stuck with a needle. Lots of people use muzzles since they are not cruel or inhumane, and can prevent costly accidents. I've never witnessed future psychological damage due to a muzzle applied for less than 5 minutes.\r Overall, I'm sure that Doc Wessels is not for everyone. He is generally quiet as he goes about his job, but always answers questions and provides quality care. And his staff is always there to back him up and clarify or answer more. I appreciate that I can make an appointment (sometimes the same day) and know I will see Dr Wessels himself. No assistants or other fill ins - EVER. His prices are extremely competitive, and the care top quality. Always has been, and I'm sure it will continue to be until he sadly retires. I can only hope the vet who takes over will live up to the high standard he has set. more

This man does not even try to deal with what he deems ""a difficult animal"". He is definitely in the wrong business or needs to retire. He has no people skills and even less animal skills. There are so many other wonderful vets out there. Don't waste your time and money here. more

It wasn't more than just barking. 12/13/2009

My chinese sharpei/pitbull liked the woman was working as his assistant but not him when he came in she barked we were willing to put a mussel on her but he refused and said to leave also my neighbors who have the same breed ( my dogs brother) whos very lovable had a problem with dr.wessel. she was being protective of my mother and I but she wasnt going to bite.Nor was she even growling.\r I understand the need for his protection, I would like to be a vet myself one day and I also went to Bristol Aggie which has a small animals class with live surgery. Honestly I think hes way better off with smaller breed dogs. My mother continues to go there because of his payment methods, also she takes my new dog whos a silky terrier and hes just fine with her. I still dislike him.\r \r Pros: Nothing Cons: rude more

GOING HERE WAS A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY 11/20/2009

Well, lets put 2+2 together here... The symptoms of feline lyme disease is lethargy, swollen or stiff joints, lack of appetite, dehydration, inactivity, fever. My cat, who is not even 2 years old, a voracious eater and active cat, is sleeping all day, refusing to eat, when he is up, walking very uncomfortably, and seeming to run a fever. After checking him myself, i find a very engorged tick on his neck. But the vet says, ""Oh, I don't believe cats get lyme disease. They are immune because of mice."" WHAT?!?!? Try a little research, Doc... I did... Only reason I'm not stopping payment on my check is because at least my cat got an antibiotic. If you're too disinterested to treat the animals people entrust to you, then go ahead and retire and spend your time fishing or hunting where you can kill animals in a more socially acceptable manner. Or actually do your job. Pros: Can't think of one at the moment Cons: Dr. Wessels seemed very condescending and uncaring... more

Does he a degree? 2/25/2009

I took a small kitten. Grant it sickly. All he did was squeezed her tummy and said she was compromized? Is that laymans terms for doesnt have a clue? He said straight up that to even try to fix her would be of a major means and doubted any hope. So I agreed to do what I thought was the kind thing. But as he picked her up I could see the lack of feeling in him. I went to grab her and he looked at me like I had lost my mind. Well maybe I did! Cause I let him put her down. I am still regreting not going somewhere else. Please dont do the same. Pros: It was close to my home Cons: It was close to my home more

A wonderful caring vet and staff. 9/12/2008

I totally disagree with the other 2 reviews. While I can understand frustration that Dr Wessels would not treat your dog, I also understand that a vets safety and that of his staff must come first. He cannot be an effective vet if is he injured. Also, my dog showed fear aggression and barked at the Dr, and he did not ask me to leave but took his time and went slowly with the dog - so I'm wondering if there wasn't more than barking? I have also visited the office on an emergency call, and paid less than half of what 2 other emergency clinics quoted me. He provided wonderful care and friendly service, and allowed a payment plan for the unexpected emergency costs since I was a client in good standing. Money was NOT his priority. Pros: Full of information. Takes the time needed. Reasonable costs for above standard care. Cons: traffic on 140 can be heavy. more

No concern for the animal 5/16/2008

I Brought my chinese sharpei / pitbull to Dr. Wessels today for a check up and heart worm pills , this was my dogs first time to wessels , The vet assistants were whispering about my dog to other customers because she was barking , As soon as Dr. Wessel walked in he called my dog aggersive because she barked , now if im correct isnt it in a dogs nature to bark? he wouldnt even look at my dog he told my mother to take her home . I suggest to take your dog some where else if you have a pitbull or pitbull mix Cons: very rude more

other people agree 9/30/2007

heartless doctor with no concern for pets only money. The dighton animal hospital is not to far from wessels and they have helped greatly. I suggest to avoid a bad doctor and high rates and go were your animal is top priority. I am an animal lover your doctor should be one to. more
