Walters Art Museum

Actually, the name of this museum is the Walters, not Walter. This is perhaps one of the best art museums I've ever been to, and it's practically hidden in Baltimore's Mt. Vernon area. Admission prices are rather steep, but they often have free or $1 Saturday morning admission if you can wake up early enough. I especially enjoy their collection of medieval artwork and suits of armor. Lots of fun-- easily an entire day's worth of education and entertainment! more

The Walters Art Museum is an internationally renowned museum. The museum has art from 55 centuries and has over 30,000 objects. The most popular collections are the Egyptian, Ethiopian, Greek and Byzantine collections. The whole collection of art in this museum is truly amazing. The museum also offers programs for families such as lectures, studio classes, family movie days, and may other things. It's a great time for the whole family. more

What a delightful art event. The Walters Art Museum is situated in downtown Baltimore. This intimate museum was abuzz with activity for the multi-day annual "Art Blooms at the Walters." Each room had a volunteer available to explain the relevance of a flower arrangement created by a local floral artist to a masterpiece which is part of an extensive collection. The floral arrangements stood on pedestals in front of the art that had inspired them. The volunteers were pleasant and available to talk at length about the piece of art as well as the floral interpretation. I would recommend this event for children at least 8 years old. more

I visited the Walters Art Museum on a class field trip. They have a really wonderful gallery. I especially enjoyed their medieval art which was both stunning and fascinating. I would definitely go visit this place again. For a while, they also had an Egyptian exhibit which was touring the country. I also enjoyed the medieval manuscripts section. This museum has some of the most incredible pieces of artwork in the country. They have all types of art from Egyptian to Greek and the collections are huge. This place can take quite a long time to explore so make sure to visit it at least a few times during the year. The impressionist paintings are so-so, but I really enjoyed all the other artworks in this museum. more

The Walters is surprisingly full of art pieces from different cultures and eras. It is unusual for a small city such as Baltimore to have such a prolific art museum, and it is must see. The Impressionist paintings were my personal favorite, although I really enjoyed the Egyptian and Greek artwork as well. The Walters also houses a gorgeous Faberge egg. Definitely set aside at least an entire afternoon to explore...I spent a whole day there and did not see everything I wanted to. more

It's been over a year since I first took my son to The Walter's Art Gallery, and he STILL talks about it! With the many special programs geared towards kids, everything from dress-up and a puppet stage, to movies, to actual art projects the kids get to do, how could a kid NOT like this place. The staff was friendly, the galleries are laid out beautifully, and there is art there for every taste, from religious art, to medieval...you name it! This is a terrific way to spend the day with your family. Lots of interesting topics and fascinating exhibits! more

I went here with my wife expecting to find a great time rather it was kind of iffy. They had a good exhibit on scrolls. And their medievil art was good too. Skip the pricey snack bar and its pricey chips. I like art but not really this gallery. Go for a snooze or an afternoon of glazed eyes. more

Baltimoreons seem to have a self-esteem problem, especially when it comes to culture. If it's good, they figure, it's not in Baltimore. If it's in Baltimore, it couldn't be very good. They drive in droves to Washington, DC to see the museums and don't even seem to be aware that the Walters Art Museum, one of the finest in the nation, is right on their doorstep. If you haven't been, then just go. The Walters' collections cover everything from ancient art through the 19th century, with particular strengths in medieval and oriental art. They regularly bring in special exhibits that just knock your socks off. The museum is small enough to be enjoyed without sensory overload but large enough to let you really enjoy all areas of art history. Education and interpretation are also excellent--recorded tours are available, but you can also just read the signage and take it all in at your own pace. Then before you go, stop by their gift shop to get some unique gifts that you won't be able to find anywhere else in Baltimore. Adult admission is reasonable ($10) and is free on first Thursdays and on Saturdays between 10 and 1. If you like it, get a membership--free admission all year, priority tickets for special events, discounts on lectures and courses, and a shop discount. more

The Walters has the grandeur and beauty of a more famous, more metropolitan museum. It is affordable and uncluttered, and the museum shop is great, with a lot of excellent books and beautiful jewelry. The gallery has free days regularly - check their schedule or call for information. One of Baltimore's finest museums, not to be missed. more
