Anchorage is so long overdue for a mega Walmart like this! I've been to other superstores on the east coast, but I'm actually more impressed with the one we have right here in Anchorage. Maybe it's because we don't have sales taxes here.. or maybe it's that they beat out all the other grocery stores on (most) prices.. whatever it is, I love the new Wallyworld and am happy to see them open!
If I had to ding them on something.. it would be that their seafood department is nothing more than a freezer section. Unlike all other grocery stores, they don't offer fresh wild Alaska seafood displayed on ice. Come on guys --- this is ALASKA where we like our seafood FRESH and WILD CAUGHT !!
I'll give them a pass on that though because the rest of the store is so well stocked and has a very nice layout.
Anchorage is loaded with grocery stores; including countless Carrs/Safeways and Fred Meyers (I lost track of how many of each we have), two Target superstores, two massive Costcos, two large Sams Clubs, two New Sagaya oriental markets, a large Natural Pantry, a midtown Walmart and New Seward Mega store, and tons of smaller asian and hispanic grocers as well as a smaller neighborhood ""Red Apple"" market. There is definitely no shortage of shopping options in this city. But I say kudos to Walmart for keeping their prices so low that they have all the other places running sales! ;o)
I really like the fact that our Walmart sells local dairy milk (Matanuska Maid) cheaper than any other grocer in the city! I also like that they stock a good deal of Alaska grown vegetables.
I still shop other stores when there's a deal too good to be true, and of course... for super fresh seafood, I'll go wherever the best deal on wild (NOT FARMED) Alaska seafood can be found.
:o)
Pros: The place is MASSIVE and the prices rock!
Cons: Seafood Department is a bummer
