WFMT is the best classical station on the FM dial. Or at least it was. It was born in Chicago in December of 1951, the year of the cat. It has kept us entertained and inspired ever since.
In addition to the great classical music which is its meat and potatoes fare, on Saturday night WFMT hosts the Midnight Special, a one of a kind radio program begun in its early days. The original host was Mike Nichols, of comedy fame and now a famous theater and film director.
The Midnight Special plays folk music and a great variety of other stuff. But it is the folk music played on WFMT by the late Ray Norstrand and currently by Rich Warren that has helped to keep Chicago a great folk music center.
I have been listening to this program since its inception and Saturday night in Chicago wouldn't be the same without it, to say the least.
