Michael Summerfield, M.D. received a Bachelor of Science degree from Emory University. He received his medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine. He went on to complete residency at Georgetown University/ Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC.
Dr. Summerfield is the Training Director for Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center residency program. There he teaches Ophthalmologists surgical techniques for cataract and anterior segment surgery. He has won the prestigious Golden Apple Award for best instructor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Summerfield speaks at national conferences on training eye surgeons. He participates in research and has published articles in leading academic journals.
Dr. Summerfield is active in local and national Ophthalmology Societies including American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the Washington DC Metropolitan Ophthalmology Society. He regularly chairs the Anterior Segment Surgical Symposium, bringing international talent to discuss latest surgical advances in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Summerfield was born and raised in Maryland. When not seeing patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. In his free time you can find him outside hiking, biking, or coaching his daughter's soccer team.
