This summer, my family and I had to make one of the most difficult decisions that we have ever faced when my mother's doctor said that she was no longer safe living at home on her own due to dementia and other health concerns. My mother is a fiercely independent woman and the family did not want to take this away from her. She needed to be in an environment that would foster her independence as well as provide professional assistance if/when it was needed. After careful research and numerous visits to other facilities, we found the perfect solution for her and us, at Village Oaks.
My mother was encouraged to decorate her room to suit her personality, which she did with personal items from home as well as a few new items to express the woman she is becoming. She even has bird feeders outside of her window to enjoy. Her room is her private sanctuary, however, when she is ready to socialize she can join other residents in one of the many common areas to chat, watch tv or join her tablemates for a meal in the beautiful dining room. My mom enjoys the outdoors and there is a beautiful courtyard designed to experience lone tranquility or for the entire family to enjoy a cookout or picnic. There are daily activities which much to the family's surprise mom participates in and even enjoys!
The entire staff is incredible, I can't even remember most of their job titles as when I am visiting mom,I am treated like family. Being a very protective and cautious daughter, I frequently ask my mother how everyone is treating her and she is quick to assure me that ""they are all so kind and just Love her!"" In the many interactions I have witnessed between her and the staff I believe that most of them do.
As hard as the decison is, if you or a loved one are at a point in life where assisted care living is the answer, I would highly recommend Village Oaks of Greenwood.
Sincerely, Minnie Hoskins
