Absolutely amazing 12/20/2010

I just visited the Villa Capri and honestly can not understand how anyone could possibly write a bad review of this restaurant! It is a small family owned business and perhaps people that didn't like it are used to the canned and frozen food of chain restaurants. Everything that I ate was delicious and completely fresh. The garlic bread was to die for and the waitress warned me there would be a lot of butter so I simply asked for lightly buttered garlic bread instead and it was perfect. The salad was delicious and I'm not sure what was in the dressing but I simply can not seem to recreate it no matter how hard I try! Then I got my steak. Oh my God, it was perfection. It was perfectly seasoned and completely juicy and tender. The lasagna that I ordered as a side dish was a perfect complement to the steak. For desert I had the spumoni. When it came out as a pink ice cream I was quite surprised, but the waitress informed me that it was a Villa Capri exclusive recipe that was could not be found anywhere else in the world! I found it to be a perfect ending to an absolutely delectable meal. On our way out I gave my compliments to the woman that sat us. It turns out she was the owner of the restaurant and she was simply wonderful! I will be back very soon and look forward to the excellent food and service that I enjoyed so much! more

I feel ill and irritated 8/9/2009

So after growing up eating at the Villa Capri as a child and having the best Italian dinner's time and time again, I decided to give it another try even though I was warned against it by people who said they would never eat there again. I had visited the Casa Calabria earlier in the week and had the most amazing steak just as I've remembered the Villa Capri to have. i was excited to share this steak with my wife for our last meal here. Knowing that they were the same family and the recipes were passed down a generation, I opted to visit the Villa Capri which was closer to my hotel. Bad mistake! To my dismay, we ordered a bottle of Cabernet, a sizzling shrimp entree, a pound of the steak sizzler, and and extra garlic bread. The waitress seemed like she had just started there and had difficulty explaining the meal and a little nervous. The bottle of wine was served without the attempt to smell the twist top and taste the wine. It was simply placed on the table with two emptly glassses that accompanied it. The salad was iceberg, wilted and drowned in the ""house"" dressing (vinegar and oil). Then the long awaited steak that I've been raving about came with the non sizzling shrimp. The entree's were served on plain white plates with no garnish and slabs of butter atop the two steaks. I would have excepted this had the entree been priced more resonably (overpriced to say the least). So far the expreriece is mediocre. As I attempted to saw through my medium rare streak, my wife watching in horror, I had to relocate to another spot on the steak to penetrate the meat. The meat that was not sizzling was hard, rubbery with many fatty tendons. Okay, I thought.... It's just a bad cut of meat. I continued to try to enjoy the meal, but there came a point where I could not pretend that it was edible. We sent 90% of it back explaining our dismay. We decided to order the famous spumoni to disguise the fact that our dinner was ruined. The spumoni came out with the check and the waitress constantly clearing our napkins no matter how we asked for more. Have I mentioned that that spomoni is usually green, this was red. The check showed that nothing had been taken off, no percentage or even a portion of the steak that had not been eaten. We asked to talk to management. We even suggested that we paid for the smaller portion. We have dined in many restaurants from great deals to five star dining and NEVER, I mean NEVER have I had this type of policy enforced in the way that it was here at the Villa Capri. Usually there is some type of consideration when a meal is sent back intact, an apology, a different menu item or a discount. In this case NOTHING was offered. A disconcerned look is what we got. Just like when your mother was say to you, ""Eat your dinner and you will like it"". Although in that case, you wouldn't be paying top dollar for your meal. She had mentioned that the meat was fresh and disregarding our claims that it was JUST a bad cut of meat. She even said that the kitchen crew ate the rest of the meat and thought it was perfect. Now, I thought that alone was strange! Not to mention that she involved other customers to prove a point (bad management, no class, how embarrasing for her). The only thing she had to say was to not come back and to go to Casa Calabria. She single handedly ruined my otherwise wonderful visit to Marquette, Michigan. I am writing this review to WARN EVERYONE to take her suggestion to heart. Please do not dine there, please go to the Casa Calabria. You will never ever be sorry you set foot into that establishment. I've never been so inspired to write a review before. Still I feel ill from the food there. Maybe because everything had to be doused in butter in order to have any flavor. Pros: garlic butter, butter bread Cons: everything more

On par with Chef Boyardee 12/28/2008

Over the years, I have had a chance to eat at a great many Italian restaurants. Some have been great, some fair, and then there's the bottom, inhabited by the likes of Villa Capri. Pros: Has ample parking Cons: Poor food, terrible service, not worth the money you'll pay more
