ok I really don't know why this place gets 5 star reviews???? I got my color done here because of the great reviews here and was the worst thing ever. I got it around 9 days ago,...

Miss this place! 3/30/2011

I use to live across the street from this place and would run in for emergencies all the time. The hair salon is amazing, and warm. You wouldn't expect such quality from a Williamsburg salon, however the absence of hipsters contribute to the professional and comfort I have continuously experienced here. I have since moved, and miss the reliability and great quality of Velvet Rose. more

You owe it to yourself!!! 4/13/2009

I visited this salon after finding it on Citysearch. The first visit was impressive, but I am reluctant to submit a review based upon a single experience. My second visit confirmed what I suspected; this is by far the best mani/pedi experience over many decades and localities. It is transformative -- a compressed vacation. My only regret is that I cannot go every day! You owe it to yourself to be this indulgent and you will never want to go anywhere else but to Audrey. Enjoy!!! Pros: Audrey turns a service into a transformative experience. Cons: None. more

A GOOD MANI & PEDI EXPERIENCE FOR JUST $20 2/24/2009

SIMPLY THE BEST MANICURE AND PEDICURE I EVER HAVE. I HIGHLY RECOMENDED.THE SALON IS SUPERCLEAN AND THE NAIL TECH AND THE OWNER ARE VERY FRIENDLY. I'M LOOKING TO RETURN BACK TO TRY ANOTHER SERVICES. Pros: NICE STAFF more

Velvet Roses is the place to be on Mondays! 1/26/2009

Although I am a semi-faithful customer (semi-faithful meaning I'm not a regular at any salon really) this is definitely my favorite salon, which I frequent the most. I've recommended a few of my friends to Maribel because she is just the best. Most recently I bumped into there latest sale which is just splendid. They have a new Pedicurist Audry so in a triple combo Monday package I got a Manicure, Pedicure and a famous (Maribel) Blow-dry for only $45 bucks. Maribel, needless to say made my hair look flawless and Audry was incredible. she gave me new implements which I take home (sanitary big plus!). The stage like manicurist area was neatly packed with all the essentials of a big nail salon. Definitely worth the trip to Brooklyn. Pros: Unbelievable prices! service always with a smile. Owner and Staff are supper friendly. Super clean Cons: ...hmmm non that are worth noting. more

Simply put - THE BEST! 10/20/2008

My experiences at Velvet Roses have always been the best! Maribel and Ruthie are fabulous and make me feel that way too. I am always greeted and treated with respect and familiarity, it really is like visiting with friends. Pros: Great service for great price =) more

In the Zone... 7/22/2008

I am a common face here at Velvet Roses, as financially possible at least. I love the vibe of this place. Its roomy, clean, modern but not overly modern to where it looks like the owner just tried way to hard. In essence its just perfect! The owner Maribel is the epitome of a superb host, sometime it feels more like your visiting a friend then going to a business. I've had that experience where getting ""beautified"" feels more like a chore then a treat. Anyhow I mainly go the VR for my color but most recently I've paid a random visit and to my surprise there is a full time pedicurist there, so I say what the hell.....WOW her service was superb, I paid $1.00 extra to have my own implements (very sanitary), she's also offering these crazy pedicures {ice cream, jell-o etc}. It was incredible the way she took her time and really did my feet! Pros: Consistent excellent service, Very Clean Cons: Can only do one pedi at a time more

Just read my experience....no subject heading needed 7/16/2008

I'm a regular at VRBS, this is my spot for everything! I usually do my hair with the first available stylist, waxing etc. Maribel has rented out the teensy spot in the back to Audrey and Dubbed it Velvet Nails. Now I've gotten my share of Pedi and Mani and although the local nail spot on the corners are okay if you want to get your feet washed and polished sometimes you need a good scrub. Moving forward, Audrey offered me a Spa Deluxe Pedi and Mani. Unrivaled is the best word I can think of at the moment, I didn't want it to be over!!! She took her time scrubbed and massaged my whole leg. it wasn't rushed, she very professional and on point to the last finishing touches of the polish. And I?ve already secured my slot for a Jell-O pedicure next week. Pros: Exceptional Service! without comparison. Affordable, great value for excellent services Cons: She is not there everyday. more

Pleasantly suprised! Great experience! 7/11/2008

I was tired of paying $80+ for a haircut in the burg, especially because I have really short hair. I read positive reviews about Velvet Roses, saw that the price was reasonable, and decided to give it a try. I must admit that I was hesitant to go there because I'm used to going to the overly-hipster haircutting places in Williamsburg, and Velvet Roses is a local, family-owned business. My appointment was with Ruth who gave me an outstanding haircut. She really took her time and told me what she was doing at all times (since I have really short, layered hair and it's easy to screw up). She wanted to make sure that I was happy with how it turned out and really made me feel comfortable. Overall a great experience. And...the haircut was only $45! Would highly recommend! more

Neighbor.....and Friend 6/17/2008

I usually like to read reviews of places that I frequent or would like to (although never adding my thoughts) and bumped into this citysearch feud, started by Ms. Magoo. I love the support that all my fellow VR enthusiast have showed Maribel (the owner) and I am obliged to respond to Magoo's ""PS"": its funny how you mention that you don't care about the yummy coffees but before the PS addition that was your last sentence...(just had to throw that in first). I do agree with you however that everyone has bad days, and perhaps these wonderful stylist just couldn't please YOU (which is fine) but to bad mouth them and there customer service is just in the wrong..... and girl you know its untrue! Its just not in Maribel?s (the owner) character! Pros: EXCELLENT PERSONABLE STAFF! GRRRRRRREAT COLORIST!!!!!!! Cons: DONT GET PAID ENOUGH TO GO EVERY OTHER DAY more

What the....... 6/11/2008

I followed Maribel from the city. Not only is she my stylist but she has become my friend over the 10 years I?ve been with her. We have built a relationship out side of her salon and that review is just bogus!! I've gone to Velvet Roses (just to say hi) on occasion and I've seen Ruthie and Maribel walk clients out in the rain with an umbrella so they don?t mess up their ?do? or run to the local 99 cent store to get umbrellas etc. I mean I?ve been there that it feels more like a deli than a salon, her mom often making yummy coffee, giving out cookies heck I?ve even been fortunate to have some homemade rice and beans (so now you see why I just stop by)! Both Maribel and Ruthie accommodate late and early clients the same, always with a smile....so honestly why did this ""B"" write that mean review! If she wasn't happy with her hair then fine, but don't be malicious and lie about the service, because I'm sure that even if you weren't 100%satisfied with the results service was given with a smile like always. Pros: Fancy looking, Expert Stylist but not stuffy or snooty! Owner and Employee always has a smile. Family Enviorment. Cons: None! None! None! Love Maribel she is the best more

weekly client shocked to see a 1 star review! 6/8/2008

A friend referred me to Maribel (as the greatest stylist she's ever had!) last year so I decided to check it out. My friend was right!! This girl is amazing!! As soon as I walked in that first time she greeted me with a smile. I hate the initial feeling when you first walk into a hair salon and the stylists all look at you as if you're a nuisance to their establishment. Ofcourse I was nervous about trying out someone new but Maribel was immediately letting me know about her techniques and she explained everything she was going to apply to my hair. My before and after was amazing. Long story short I became a weekly client. I tried other salons closer to my area but I just didnt get the same treatment that I got from VR. So if you are reading these comments because you are in search of top notch hair service this is the place to go! Please disregard the 1 bad review from ms. magoo. I recently referred a co worker and she saw this bad review before going to Maribel. I couldn't believe her and had to read it for myself. This why I took it upon myself to respond. If you have attended VR for even 1 visit you will know this disgruntle person was just having a bad day or perhaps skipped a dosage. Myself and my friends are very pleased with the services that we recieve from Maribel. She has very affordable prices and really nice hair products which I also stock at home! Good Luck to Ms. Magoo! Pros: very affordable prices, friendly service, great products, nice restaurants in the area Cons: hard to find parking more

Sultry cut. Awesome color 6/6/2008

Now I don't know what the bad rating was about, but if I were you, I wouldn't dare to read that. And the things that he/she comments doesn't even sound like Maribel. I'll give you the scoop. Pros: The professionalism. Cons: Parking. more

Monday morning routine city search scan!...and I can't believe what's written about VRBS...... 6/2/2008

OMG! CANT BELIEVE THIS BAD REVIEW! I frequent Velvet Roses since I discovered it late last year, and these girls are the best! My hair is not that manageable not to mention my laziness and after testing a string of suckie hair salon's my friend recommended Maribel, a 10year vet. So now I am a VRBS regular going at least once a week and my experience?s are never short of flawless! In fact once she gave me a hair cut that I wasn?t all to happy with. I called her 2 days later and explained that I tried to make it work but I still wasn?t to happy. I went in the next day, she worked her magic and she didn?t even want to charge me?(so I just gave her a nice tip) and the cut is PERFICT NOW. Pros: Friendly! Attentive! always has a smile! light atmosphere, professional people! Cons: No parking. I got a ticket last time I went. so I take the train now. more

worst colorist(s) ever and paied for dry after. REALLY REALLY BAD!!!!!!!! 5/31/2008

ok I really don't know why this place gets 5 star reviews???? I got my color done here because of the great reviews here and was the worst thing ever. I got it around 9 days ago, and I swear!!!! on my life I have huuuuuuuge roots again!!!!!!!. like what is wrong with them""? and besides that they have a scam , i called them before, told them about my my hair ( how long and stuff) , they said, oh yeah 140 bucks for whatever.. they charged me 200 bucks and 60 bucks for blo dry after.!!!!!! Pros: I wish I had something to say here. Cons: bad color, expensive. more

I love the way my hair looks right now. 2/9/2008

This place..is great. This Friday was my second time going to VR...and I found more reasons to love it this time around. My first time, I was scared out of my mind. I've been going to the same stylist for the past 8-9 years....the idea of someone new touching my hair was terrifying. But Maribel's knowledge and ability to actually listen to what I wanted made me feel at ease. I went in for highlights and a cut, and was afraid SOMETHING would go wrong. And it did not. My hair looked AMAZING. Everyone who saw my hair afterwards were like ""oh my god monica your hair looks great"". Maribel worked her magic and my color looks awesome, and my layers look exactly how I wanted them to. Other than her and Ruthie actually knowing what they're doing, they're very friendly and made me feel at home (they even remembered my name!..lol). I'll definetely continue going here to get my hair done. I'm glad I found this gem. Thanks so much guys! Pros: Very friendly, know what they're doing. And there's only two girls working there, but there's virtually no waiting time. Cons: Kinda far from the train station...I hate walking. But it's worth it so whatever. more

I'm referring my friends and you, Stranger... 1/3/2008

I just came back from Velvet Roses and my roomie said it is the best my hair has looked in years. While I am pretty indecisive about my hair (always looking for some dream hairdresser to tell me what will look amazing on me) owner/hairstylist Malinda listened to my garbled ideas and gave me a perfect blond that really looks like the color I had when I was a little girl! I got a trim and the blowout was free. The highlights are extremely natural (not chunky, not streaky, not frosted white) and she does not have the desire to push products which is very unusual, right?! I told her how my hair becomes brassy and orange very quickly and she gave me a simple but trusty ""blue"" wash that I only have to use like once every three weeks, I actually wanted to buy it because it just made sense, so I did. Did I mention how affordable, ridiculously friendly and comfortable the place is? Plus her mom totally washes you hair thoroughly and makes you want to go to sleep. I actually wish I could have tipped her more...for realz. Pros: mad skillz, affordable, friendly, good location more

Fantastic, Fantastic!!! 1/2/2008

Although it took me a little while to find this place (it is right around the corner from where I live in Williamsburg), I am ecstatic to have finally found a stylist in NY. I have tried places like Swank and BnB, feeling okay about the cuts but not entirely enthusiastic. Ruthy cut my hair, and she was very sweet, and even offered me some of her crackers. I went in late after work on a Thursday night, and although they had closed before my hair was done, Ruthy took her time to make sure my hair color was perfect (and it IS perfect!). Also, the haircut she gave me was cutting edge. I went in not entirely sure what I wanted, and I came out with hair to die for! I've received more compliments on my hair than I ever did from my cuts at Swank and BnB. The price is right, too. For a cut and color, it cost me about $100 - cheapest I've had in the city! Again, the staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the talent is endless. I will forever be a repeat customer! Pros: Friendly staff, great service, great cuts! Cons: Nothing! more

I love my hair!!! 8/27/2007

Maribel has been taking care of my hair for almost 2 years now and since then I have been so daring with my styles. I have medium length, normal textured hair and the most I would have done to my hair was a blowdry, boooring! But since Maribel has been caring for my hair I feel so comfortable to try new and different styles. I've gone from 70's Farah Faucett to 2010 futuristic looks. Maribel is capable of copying exactly from a magazine or coming up with her own styles. She can even work with anything I try to come up on my own. Anyone that gets their hair done by Maribel is guaranteed great satisfaction! The only down to this story is that I do not live in the area. I have a 40-minute commute on 3 trains but in the end it is all worth it! I get compliments about my hair almost everyday! Maribel thanks for making me look like a celebrity. I have referred a couple of friends and they are amazed by the touch of these great hands! This weekend while I waited for Maribel to do my hair I had a manicure done by Ruthie and it looks great! VR is a very nice, clean and relaxing spot to go for beauty treatment. Besides hair there are other services available and great products for sale. Nice restaurants in the area too! Pros: very nice relaxing atmosphere while you wait and have your services done, affordable prices! nice restaurants in the area Cons: location not in my neighborhood more

Supper Dupper Hair Stylist 8/27/2007

Like so Amazed at what can be done! Whoa what service is all i have to say! I make a random appt for the works after walking past the place and researching it. The stylist (Maribel) has been in the business for years although very young. Her attitude is welcoming already but when she explains the ""hair procedures"" with such details and confidence you just sit back and relax in this huge comfy salon. She is so gentle that its just way to easy to fall asleep while she works her magic. Her attentiveness and not to mention the fact that not only does she remember your name when you walk in but she also recognizes your voice when you call. The attention to detail as far as the hair goes is wonderful, for example she knows by looking at the hair what was previously done to it; and her willingness to help you save a $1 instead of over spend $10 is just amazing. I don't know how I did it before, but I know that I am hooked! Its awesome to know that great customer service & knowledge of hair care & treatment is just a few stops away! Pros: Everything! Cons: You can't get enough more

I can't wait to go back! 8/26/2007

Wow is all I can say and that is the truth. I have never been to a salon that truly deserves a ton of recognition like Velvet Roses. First off my hair was in terrible condition from a 1 to 10 it was probably a -6. So I decided to do some research and find a salon in Brooklyn on the internet so my hair could stop getting worse. I stumbled upon Velvet Roses and the reviews were so good I could not say no. My mother made an appointment for her and myself. When we reached there it seemed pretty nice but it only got better. Maribel did wonders to my damaged hair. She literally undone years of damage and made my hair brand new again. I also got a beautiful cut and style and its all because of Maribel, I could'nt be anymore thankful. Ruthie did a lovely job on my mothers hair revitalizing it back to a healthy stage again and I could'nt be any happier. The atmosphere was great. Maribel and Ruthie were very friendly and helpful giving tips as they go along, I can't ask for more. My mother and I are extremely pleased and can't wait to go back. Pros: Great service, value, atmosphere, neighborhood, and everything else!!!!!!! more
