Pass your boards w/ flying colors & learn advanced subjects 2/2/2011

I got a great education at this school. Not only were the basics more than adequately covered, but so were some advanced topics not included in the curriculum anywhere else. When I got out into the workforce I found myself leaps ahead of other graduates in experience, knowledge, independence, and confidence. Unlike students I knew at other schools, I passed my state boards with high scores THE FIRST TIME and so did everyone in my graduating class. The negative reviews are rubbish. I can tell you exactly the type of student that says those things. I saw three of them when I went to school there. It's the one that can't get past high school. They hide in the back when called for clients, then complain when students like the rest of us get all the experience and training. They're too busy getting pregnant in the local park or reading fashion magazines and gossiping in the lunch room to show up to class, study their text book, or complete their paperwork. Then they flop around in their chair, moan loudly, pick fights with other students, and blame the staff when they can't graduate because they can't pass their pre-boards written exams. They can't keep a budget or make responsible payments to save their life. So they blame the staff, drama with other students, or the school when they can't pay their bills. A career in the Cosmetology industry requires the motivation and solid work ethic of a contractor. If you can't manage that, then you're looking at the wrong career choice. Like with any college or trade school for adults, the instructors are not going to play hide n seek, cops n robbers, or pull you out of bed to give you an education. If that's what you need in order to learn, then maybe you should consider sweatshop work, military, or prostitution instead. more

Part 1 of 2 Truth of VSB 7/22/2009

This review is mainly for anyone who is interested in enrolling in this school. As a former student for the past 13 months I can tell you that there is merit to some of the reviews posted on here. This school is owned by a lady who misleads potential enrollee?s and has no idea that her instructor of 16 years does absolutely the minimal when it comes to teaching. The main thing she does is sit at the front desk an attempt to treat the general public with a professional attitude, and will assist to a student?s request for help when needed. Even then, as a student you?re not sure if she is going to be rude to your client or totally mess up their hair. This instructor seems to be a relatively good person with a good heart who seems to be completely burned out on her job and could care less about the education of the students or the general public. One of her main characteristics is control. She makes sure all students know she is in control which usually is far from the truth. In the long run she comes across as a very rude individual to the students as well as the general public. If the owner had any sense in running a business she should listen to these complaints, because if she just knew how things were on the salon floor, perhaps she would be more willing to see the students side of an issue and have less drop outs. Although, I?m sure she doesn?t mind the drop outs cause she still gets the students money one way or another. A few hours a week observing the school/students isn?t sufficient enough to really understand what type of teaching is not being taught and how this instructor handles the general public. Although, when the owner is on the floor she just stands and stares at the students which makes them very uncomfortable, and of course the instructor all of a sudden starts doing the job she is suppose to be doing. Somehow over the past 16 years she has the owner believing she does a good job which the owner must agree because this instructor is still there. Perhaps years ago she was a good instructor but now she just seems like a tired employee who needs to retire . Pros: affordable Cons: dysfunctional more

Begging for a better education 6/12/2009

I can tell you as a student at the school, it certainly has the potential to be a great school, I see that it states on a previous post that the owner would rather put money into educating the students rather than into upgrades for the the building, that would be great if that were true. I believe no matter what products are being used, not one student is going to get an adequate education without the proper instruction! Hire another teacher PLEASE! Ms. Karen is being pulled in a thousand different directions because she is our ONLY teacher. Ms. Soto is lazy and could care less to give a proper education, she is on a constant power trip changing policies daily to fit her moods. I will say I read in previous posts that the school is dirty, that is not true at all, i think old is being confused with dirty. DO RIGHT BY YOUR STUDENTS AND DO RIGHT BY YOUR CLIENTS AND HIRE MORE STAFF! Pros: good price Cons: lacks in the education department more
