Cold food and horribly overpriced. 11/29/2008

We saw the recommendations and my wife insisted on going through the 35 minute wait to get a table.\r \r Once sat, our waiter didn't show for another 10 minutes!\r We ordered the drinks and appetizers - my wife's mixed drink was overpowering in its strength. It was clear that they didn't know how to make a Margarita.\r I ordered a Sam Adams on tap - it was flat.\r The appetizers were small and not very good. I had the escargots and they were almost cold and not properly cooked. We complained but they didn't seem to care.\r \r Once we got our main meals they were ALL cold. We complained again and were told that it would be another 30 minutes until they came out again - they were sorry because there was a party of 10 people that they were tending to...obviously, a table of 3 didn't matter to them. We got the check for almost $200 and got out of there NEVER to return.\r This place is for wannabe's who think that they know fine dining. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up. You were warned. Pros: Nice looking place Cons: Everything else more

Great salad bar. Our ""go to"" restaurant. 8/6/2007

Not good for kids !? Our 2 year old LOVES Van Rensselaer's! It's the one restaurant we bring her to where we know she'll eat and where we'll all enjoy the experience. It starts with the salad bar - enabling us to get her healthy food within minutes of being seated. The salad bar has an outstanding and tasty selection, and was constantly refreshed every time we've been there. We've eaten at Van Rensselaer's over 70 times in the past 7 years, and found it to be a consistently high quality, pleasant, fulfilling dining experience. It is our ""go to"" restaurant when we're on the Cape. The only reason I'm not granting 5 stars is because my wife thinks the scallops are not the best to be found on the upper cape. They're very good, but frankly other restaurants nearby do better. I, on the other hand, have never had a better Tenderloin au poivre - including at restaurants like Grille 23 in Boston - Van Rensselaer's beef dishes are among the best I've had anywhere. VR's get our enthusiastic recommendation for consistently high quality food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. They don't do lunch, only breakfast & dinner. Try to make reservations if you plan on going at 7pm on a Saturday in August - they do fill up then. Pros: Salad Bar. Excellent beef, great chicken and seafood dishes. Exemplary service. Cons: Prices in line with other Cape Cod eateries. Not cheap, but certainly not a ripoff. more

Exceptionally fine food, great salads 7/18/2005

If V.R.'s were in the city of Boston, the lines would go around the block. They offer consistenly fine, fresh seafood & an outstanding salad bar. We've been dining there several times a summer for more than a decade, and have never been let down. Every meal has us saying to each other - ""We've got to do this more often!"" No, we don't have any stake in the place. We just really enjoy dining there. Reservations are a good idea, but not mandatory. If you like seafood, try ""Seafood V.R.'s"" - an assortment of great flavors, - scallops, shrimp & schrod. Their steaks and prime rib are fine, too. On our latest trip (June 6, 2009), tried their Blackened Kapalua Ahi Tuna - Better than best! Opened our evening with a dozen clams casino (shared by two) and trips to the salad bar. A great evening out (again!). October 2010 - We've been to VR's a half dozen times this summer (if it weren't for the 'new retiree's budget,' we'd be there a couple of times a week!). Their menu has something for everyone - and has only improved over time. We love this place!!! Pros: Quality , Consistency, Friendly service more
