I am a Receptionist at VCA BVAH. Our hospital's adoption program is a true value! I myself have adopted two pets from our hospital, one of which did have giardia (an intestinal parasite which is very common in puppies and kittens). We adopt out pets that are completely vaccinated, spayed/neutered & perform any corrective surgeries. The cost of all of these services alone exceeds the cost of the adoption. The price of the adoption goes back into the stray animal fund which goes towards helping other stray animals. The puppy in question had no diarrhea for weeks during the time he was here (I should know, I had to clean his cage).Often times, puppies who go to a new home and switch to a new diet can have stress diarrhea. If the stool had been brought back to our hospital, as was mentioned, there would not have been a charge to have it re-checked, but b/c it was brought elsewhere there was a charge. Unfortunately, this is out of our control. We are happy to hear that the recheck stool came back negative for giardia. At least now you know that he was giardia free when you adopted him.
