VCA Alexandria WORST VET 1/14/2015

I would give 0 if Possible. The very worst Animal Hospital doctors and management. Outrageous prices. Was not allowed to be with my 12 year old MinPin for emergency treatment. She was terrified. Gasping for breath. 850$ s later - supposedly saving me money, Sent me home with antibiotics & instructions to keep her in a bathroom with humidifier. She was diagnosed with Pneumonia. She could not vet, drink, barely breath how was in supposed to give her pills? hours later took her back panicked. They put her on Oxygen and another 1700$. I stupidly left her there for help. They NEVER called. I called to say I was coming back - oh we were just going to call you with updated fees!! Got back to be with her - by herself in a box looking terrible, lonely & pathetic. Totally traumatised begged for alternative choices. The doctor made me feel like a monster asking for palliative care do I could take her home to be in her own bed with me. Totally money grubbing all they care about is the income NOT more

Editorial review from Citysearch 1/7/2015

THIS VET DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR PET!! The doctor was incredibly rude and insensitive to my emotional situation. She insisted on me euthanizing my pet when I asked for an alternative treatment. She then persisted in arguing with me over the phone and refused to come out and talk to me personally about my pet's condition, THEN proceeded to kick me out of the vet hospital! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE IF YOU WANT YOUR PET TO LIVE. There are plenty of other vet hospitals whose staff truly care about animals and their profession. more

Money Grubbers! 9/13/2011

I had to take my dog to AAH this past weekend because she had a painful abdomen after getting into cat food and her regular vet was not open. After throwing down $3500 for 2 x-rays, and ultrasound, IV fluids, and medication, and (as it turns out,) an otherwise unnecessary 2 night stay, they did nothing to help my dog. Moreover, the ultrasound they performed was not written up in a way that was useful to the specialist / surgeon that I ultimately had to take my dog to see to get her help, which meant that I the ultrasound had to be repeated by someone who actually knew what they were doing. \r \r AVOID THIS PLACE!! For emergency care, you'd be better off going straight to South Paws in Fairfax where they have 24 hour emergency care and vets on staff who can actually treat your pet. more

Don't forget AAH is a business concerned with making a profit 1/29/2011

AAH provides a valuable service and for the most part, I've been relatively satisfied with the care we've received over the last 8 or so years. \r \r The problem, as has been cited heavily here, is their insultingly cavalier attitude toward costs. They're very vague about what things are going to cost until you get the final bill for services rendered and then you have no choice but to sign for a $3,000 bomb in your credit card bill. I was stunned when the receptionist was saying, okay we're going to just put the low estimate figure on your credit card and it was $2,500! \r \r And this is a trend spanning several years. I went in a few years ago with an 18 year old cat who was clearly at the end of its life. I brought her in to have her put to sleep but the vet was really pushing all of these further tests. "Let's try a couple things first" and it wasn't until afterward that I realized these couple things were going to add more than a thousand dollars to my bill. And in the end, my cat was more

There's something VERY wrong with AAH's "Cash over Care" approach 9/25/2010

I agree 100% with what most of the reviewers have written about the approach to care and callousness of the front office. For most of us, our pets are our family. When your pet's in crisis, the last thing you need is someone holding your pet hostage and badgering you for money. Yes, this is an expensive area and I have no problem paying for the best for my pet. But, there's something VERY wrong with AAH's "Cash over Care" approach. Also, I fully agree with not feeling comfortable with them not letting you be with your pet during care. Pets know their human companions and most vets usually WANT us there to calm our pets so that the Vets can provide them with good medical care. more

Only go in an emergency 7/26/2010

I had to take my Bagle dog there twice, because my regular vet was closed. On both occasions it was over $400. It is very, very pricey there. I do not like the fact that the take the animal away from you when giving and IV or other meds as well as checking vitals, etc. This has never happened to me before and I don't like it. more

Glad they're close 3/19/2010

Both times my Sasha has gotten into chocolate they've taken very good care of her, right down to having me complete a what-to-do-if document, listing prices for each level of care so I knew ahead of time what I would be getting myself into if her condition went south. They were also very good about informing my regular vet about the visit and what they'd done for her permanent record. In an emergency, I'm very glad they're only five minutes from home (especially since I didn't even grab a coat the first time). The only hitch was when the vet was amazed at how much Sasha had eaten and I had to remind him that she is a pug, after all. more

12 years great care from AAH 2/25/2010

I live on Capitol Hill and switched my first dog, a Samoyed then 10 years old, to AAH in 1998 -- after a friend's dog collapsed in the middle of the night, was taken to Friendship Heights vet hospital and was forced to put the dog back in the car to rush to AAH to get a blood transfusion. I have been delighted with AAH ever since. If your pet has a problem and the vet needs to confer with other doctors, you get the benefit of a large team and their decades of experience. When Buck was 13 and diagnosed with a treatable but incurable condition, the AAH vets stressed quality of life centered on diet and meds, instead of expensive invasive procedures to simply extend her life. They worked with me to devise a healthy home-cooked diet, augmented with holistic supplements as well as traditional prescriptions. When regularly scheduled bloodwork showed her kidneys were also failing, the doctor called in the evening to gently say that to save Buck from suffering, a hard decision was needed. more

OK for when your real vet is closed 2/3/2010

Open 24 hrs. Very clean and pleasing waiting area, front office are very friendly staff. Technicians on the emergency phone are wonderful. RE: DVM's... Not sure about diagnoses. Very Very Pricey. Options for treatment don't seem to include any holistic or cheaper options. Seem like canned answers that get them a lot of money. more

Alexandria Animal Hospital is darn good 12/29/2009

When we lived closer to it, we took our dog there and after we moved farther away we kept going. Yes it it pricey, but the care we got was great. When our dog got cancer they were very kind and worked with us for the best solution. We were well informed and they truly cared. Everyone who is interested in price and quality should pay $25 and join the "washington checkbook", it rates all vets by data from customers who are members. It also gives each a price index. AAH index is $106 and it does not get a checkmark for quality or price. There are several places with a cost index of $130-$146. The cheaper places are $58-$80. There were 24 vets with "checkmarks" for quality and price. Cost index for those ranged from $61-$89. Keep in mind, the close to the city, the more expensive. If you live far away or want to drive, it will be cheaper. When your pet is dying, this is the place to go. more

Alexandria Animal Hospital is great. 11/20/2009

Alexandria Animal Hospital is great. We have been goin to AAH for many years. Started going there when Dr. Witter started--that has been a long time ago. As time has progressed we have met many great doctors and find them very attentative to our little people. Their cost seems to be reasonable. Thanks Alexandria Animal Hospital. Great Place! 11/17/2009

I am shoked about how some of the reviewers complain about the prices. I have been a pet owner all my life and have done a bit of price shopping. Trust me- the prices are similar all over to northern VA area. I have always recieved quality care in this place, and have been a client since I was a little girl. I get better customer care here then when I go to my doctor. I sat in the Er with my little dog not too long ago and witnessed a very upset family and what they were going through. The receptionist treated them with compassion and respect, and although I ended up waiting longer because their cat was sicker than my dog, I was glad that I was going to get the same care and it was worth the wait. I would not take my pets anywhere else. more

No thanks! 11/7/2009

All I have to say is NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll go back to my other vet. I tried them just cause a friend reccomended one of hte doctors. NEVER AGAIN! more

Alexandria Animal Hospital 10/27/2009

by far, the worst I have experienced in terms of attitude, process, and price. if you are looking for quality service, you might get lucky--some are happy. I never liked that they took the pet out of sight for everything. I had not experienced that until this vet, apparently it is because of a conveyor like approach. you can forget about the feel good approach at this place, hamburger in; hamburger out. always left a bit uneasy, wondering what was done. they were the closest, but after 4 visits decided that was it and they wanted $20 for 1 year's worth of history. NOTE: they can provide that on a cd for the same $20. 100 cds cost $17. no matter, the history has always been complimentary at the numerous vets I have seen over the past 10 years of many of moves, military. they charge $20 for a piece of paper with the service indicating all the money you gave them. I certainly cannot recommend this place; alexandria animal hospital has their priorities in one place, your wallet more

Very Expensive! 10/23/2009

I agree with the several individuals that posted that this hospital is WAY overpriced. I took my dog in several months ago because he had GI issues. They told me that he would have to stay overnight and that the bill would be $1900. I decided to take him home and see how he would do overnight. I ended up bringing him back the following morning and the price had gone up to $2500. They kept him there for 3 days and refused to let me take him any earlier. I was stuck with a $2500 bill! While the care for my dog was very good, I would definitely suggest looking around at other hospitals in the area before taking your pet here. more

They have my business for life! 7/21/2009

Very professional and compassionate. For those of you complaining about the prices, welcome to Northern Virginia! Alexandria saved my cat when 3 other places were too busy to see me. They now have my business for life! more

BRING LOTS OF MONEY 6/29/2009

After many years of having our dog treated at this place, we've had enough of the condescension and shameless gouging that are its hallmarks. A visit for a slight leg sprain left me over $600 lighter in the wallet. Need an x-ray? It'll set you back an absurd $185. Questions about the blatant bill padding are met with rudeness by the front desk. To cap it off, if you want to pay with a check they demand your social security number -- that's right, not a driver's license number, but your personal social security number. The whole experience so disgusted me that I felt like I needed a shower after it was over. All this would hardly be tolerable if my pet were getting great care there, but I've always come away from this place feeling that the treating vet was mediocre at best. So, good riddance AAH, you won't be seeing us again. Do yourself, your pet and your wallet a favor and avoid this place. more

Alexandria Animal Hospital is great with my crazy dog. 6/25/2009

I have an extremely aggressive little dog (Spitz rescued from an abusive home), and we were nearly banned from our last two vets because he he would attack anyone who approached him. I picked Alexandria Animal Hospital to get my dogs shots renewed because they were close to my house--after reading the reviews, I was a bit nervous, but thought I'd give it a shot. Dr. Baxter and her assistant were polite, professional, and had me and my dog taken care of very quickly. Nobody was hurt--including my dog--and I felt appreciated and respected through the entire visit. And no drugs were given to my dog to calm him, they just worked in a fast and professional matter, and he was fine! After seeing how my dog reacted when he was tranquilized by his previous vet visit (didn't go well) I was amazed at this. Count me in as a satisfied customer. Finally, to those complaining about the costs: we live in one of the most expensive areas of the country here in Alexandria. Sure, the vet bill was more

Alexandria Animal Hospital is the best in the area 6/19/2009

I just had my first scare as a new pet owner. My lab got in to tons of chocolate. I took him to Alexandria and they were awesome. It was not cheap, but I was not expecting it to be, after all I went there at 2 am, and my dog needed to get his stomach pumped. I would definitely recommended to everyone. It is unfortunate that other reviewers had a different experience. Actually it is a bit hard to believe. There is probably something missing from their stories. I am switching my records to Alexandria Animal Hospital. more

Alexandria Animal Hospital is UNTRUSTWORTHY 6/12/2009

I'm seeing a pattern here. They take a sick animal, particularly one with vomiting or diarrhea, and treat the condition as a emergency so they can push up the bill. They took our dog with diarehha and scared my wife (a first-time dog owner) into letting them house him overnight. We paid $1300.00 only to have him sick again within two weeks. The next vet we went to cured him with a new diet and some common gastrointestinal medications. more
