This was my third visit to this shop. Short version: Parts I specifically said not to replace were replaced, I was give NO explanation as to why. I was treated RUDELY and questioned WHY I needed an explanation. If you are the type of car owner who doesn't mind being treated rudely, has money to waste and doesn't know any better, this place is perfect for you. Long version: I have a 2000 toyota. Its a great car, but I plan on donating it in a few months. However, being a good car owner, I wanted it tuned up and checked out. I typically get my car looked at in NJ at an STS with floor to ceiling glass windows and mechanics who both listen and are more than happy to show customers the parts that are being replaced, and explain the bill. Yesterday, 8/13, I brought my car to Uptown. I called ahead and got an estimate of $350 plus parts for a tune-up. As this was my third visit, I was not suprised by the price. But given my schedule, I thought it was worth it in time savings. I was wrong ... When I dropped off the car, I specfically mentioned that I just had both the battery and the spark plugs replaced. This particular corolla requires particular type of spark plugs and they are pricey. (I don't know why, but I verified this information through several reputable sources.) I specifically stated to the gentleman who took my car that the spark plugs are brand new (replaced in March 2010) and did not need to be replaced. I also said call me before any work is done, I don't want to spend any more than $350. I spoke with Andy, the owener that afternoon, we agree the cost is $350 with minimal cost for parts. I remind Andy that I don't need spark plugs and I am donating the car and do not want to spend much over $350. I get told ""OK"" I pick up the car today, 8/14/10. At first I am told by the woman at the counter that she doesn't know where my car is - she only works there on Saturdays. I say OK and go outside and find my car parked on the street. When I go back inside the office, I am handed the bill. My bill is over $430! When I ask for an explanation, I get ""blown off."" I start to review it and ask specific questions, i.e. why was I charged for ""plugs""? I get told to ""calm down."" (I was very calm.) Finally, the woman's husband, who is the shop manager comes in. All he says is that he doesn't know what was done on my car but the charge is for new spark plugs. This is irritating since the bill only lists costs and doesn't say what was done! I ask to see the ""plugs"" that were replaced. He can only find 3 out of 4. I look at them and they are BRAND NEW! I say as much and ask: why would you replace a brand new part and then bill for it? I get a ""line"" - customers just want new ones. I state that I specifically spoke with Andy and the intake guy and said not to replace them. I ask to speak with Andy and get told he is not there. I then get told to pay the bill or they will not release my car. I told them it was unacceptable and they need to give my back my spark plugs and give me a credit for a part I told them not to replace. Ultimately, I get a credit for my missing spark plug and a credit for the cost for the new spark plugs. I will never come back here; I'd rather wait around an STS in NJ where my questions will be answered and I will not be treated disrespectfully. Not to mention, $350 for tuneup is expensive. I know its Manhattan, but its not Dubai!
