We were very loyal customers of Umi for a long time, ordered from them 2-3 times a month. Always satisfied with the food, was a bit nicer than some of the other Japanese places in the area so we stuck with them. That is until our most recent experience. We called for a delivery at about 6:45p.m. on a Saturday expecting it would take a little while (45 minutes or so is the average) but nothing outrageous. An hour and 15 minutes later I notice how much time we'd been waiting and just as I was about to call and check on the order the phone rings. The person on the other end starts speaking and all I could understand was ""where.... address"" bad connection and heavy accent. I tried to ask where the delivery person was located to give them directions assuming they were a few blocks away, no luck, he didn't understand me at all. I pass the phone to someone else hoping they could do better. Finally we figure out that he is in Rockville Center- we were in Long Beach. There were still communication problems so the delivery person hands the phone to someone else. Now this person tells us that they are actually in Lynbrook! So at this point our food has gone from Oceanside to Lynbrook and we're waiting for it in Long Beach. After a few minutes explaining how to get here the delivery person just hangs up. Understandably annoyed at this point we call the restaurant expecting some sort of compensation, the chef could easily have prepared new dishes for us and the delivery person could pick them up on his way to us from Lynbrook. We were met with incredible disregard and attitude from the manager on the phone. No explanation, no apology. He simply asked us ""you want to wait another hour?"" and when we said that's unacceptable as we've already been waiting 1 and a half he said ""well, it's saturday, we're very busy, what do you want?"" What do we want?!?! We want to know how our food ended up in Lynbrook, a half hour in the opposite direction of where it should have been. We had already paid by c.c. over the phone so we didn't bother cancelling and anything else would have taken an hour more so we just dropped it. When the delivery person arrived he was very apologetic and said (in other words) that he was told LB meant Lynbrook. Obviously on one end or the other there was some sort of miss-communication. These things happen but what should never happen, especially these days, is the complete lack of customer service here. A simple apology would have been sufficient and even if having the chef re-prepare the food would have meant another hour of waiting the manager should have just said "" I apologize and we'll have it to you as soon as possible."" The treatment we received was unacceptable and we will never patronize this establishment again.
