So terribly disappointed.
When I was younger, I would never have dreamed of going to an area hospital other than Wilson Memorial/UHS.
The last several experiences I had at WMH left me very concerned and I have since made changes in my healthcare decisions.
At the TOP of the list is a SEVERE neglect of INFECTION CONTROL! When nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers are trained, they learn extensive methods to prevent cross contamination, thus, preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, influenza, etc.
EVERY time I have been to or accompanied someone to WMH, I have watched Registered Nurses, MDs and support staff give injections, start IVs and examine wounds WITHOUT GLOVES and WITHOUT WASHING OR SANITIZING THEIR HANDS PRIOR!! Clean hand are infection control 101, this is why there is a hand-washing poster in every hall and every patient room.
On several occasions, I have asked hospital staff for assistance and been told, they are just an intern, or they just came on duty, they can't help me. An offer to direct me to someone who can help did not follow.
An experienced ER nurse, whom I won't name, has treated me, family members and other employees with great disrespect and clearly should consider another aspect of nursing.
I wish I could write a glowing report about how the staff is caring and the protocol is exceptional, but that is not the case.
I strongly recommend being pro-active with your care and encouraging your providers to wash their hands, glove and disinfect equipment. It may save you another trip to WMH.
