I love Jamaican food. My grandmother was from the island and I've traveled there several times for vacations, so my taste for Jamaican food runs a little bit deeper than the curried chicken or patties that most people associate with it. Everything I've had at Tropicana has been good, prepared the way it is on the island, and nice and fresh. From what I've seen, dishes seem to be cooked to order. My favorite -- ABSOLUTE favorite -- is callalloo and saltfish. On Jamaica, it's usually eaten for breakfast, but you can get it anytime of day here. Callalloo is a green vegetable, sort of like spinach or collard greens, and saltfish is dried, salted codfish. Mixed with callalloo, it is mmm mmm good. Here, they serve it to you with black eyed peas and rice, and a cabbage side dish. Prices are extremely reasonable -- everything, from what I've seen, is between $5 and $10. Don't come here to sit and eat. While it is clean, the atmosphere is busy and fast-foodish. There is parking in back, but you can usually find a space right out front.
