As someone who has lived in Italy and has long been a lover of Italian food, I can attest that this is a real Italian Trattoria. The food is delicious and the helpings are plentif...

Maybe ""I"" messed up because I ordered soup & salad for lunch, not pasta. I didn't even get to order all the way before the waitress interrupted me & finished the order for me. I...

Fantastic! 9/15/2003

This resteraunt was recommended by a co-worker. The recommendation was right on! The food and service were fantastic. We arrived at 5:30 on a Friday, so it wasn't really busy. Blake was our waiter and his service was superb. I can't say enough about the food, either. My husband had the chicken ravioli and loved it (He's not a big fan of chicken normally.). I would recommend for anyone. It is a bit pricey if you plan on drinks, salad and dessert with you meal, but for a special night out, you definitely won't be disappointed. Pros: service, food, ambiance Cons: small parking lot more

The real best Italian in Twin Cities. 9/9/2003

What a great evening...... BEST MEAL & Service I have seen in a long time. I've tried a lot of Italian places in Twin Cities, but I never tasted Italian until Trattoria da Vinci. The food and the desserts are litterally a feast for the senses. By far and away the most authentic Italian food in Minnesota, cooked by a real Italian Chef, who is as modest and friendly as only people who know their profession well can be. A very classy restaurant, without the pretentiousness of some places and the value is excellent. Pros: Inexpensive , Parking, Romantic more

St. Paul's best kept secret 5/28/2003

The last time I was here, they had live Opera singers performing in the dining area. The Pasta bar of course was operating at full capacity and everyone was having a good time. The bread they serve to the table is simply fantastic. But don't fill up because the portions at the pasta bar are huge. I recommend experimenting with unusual combinations because you can get the standard stuff elsewhere. This place is something special and as such should be challenged to make you a special dinner. The restaurant is decorated Italian style, but not the checkered table cloths and candles you probably associate with Italian restaurants. Rather it has renaissance decor with fountains, statues and plenty of open space. Pros: atmosphere, food, wine list Cons: city street parking more

Hidden Gem 1/4/2003

Went here the first time on a blind date. The date didn't really work out but I've been back to the restaurant many times! Definately equal to St. Paul's current star, Pazzaluna, but much more romantic and less pretentious. Give it a try! Pros: superb food, romantic, knowledgable staff Cons: Parking/ no valet more

Our Little Secret 11/26/2002

The food is outstanding! Chef/Partner Angelo Vopicelli is one of the very few authentic Italians delivering the goods in this town. One of the most attractive restaurants in town. Usually not very busy. (?) We love this place. Pros: Authentic, Atmosphere, Romantic Cons: Smoking more

Great food, friendly staff! 11/16/2002

I've been to da Vinci's several times now, and I highly recommend it. It's usually not busy in the evenings, but the dinners are wonderful. The menu has a good variety, and I've enjoyed everything I've gotten there. They are also a great place for events -- just give them a call, and they'll help you set up a wonderful evening! more

We'll be back!! 11/8/2002

I loved the ambiance, white table clothes, soft background music. But not a hoity-toity place. The service was very good, but we were there and gone by 6:45 pm on a Saturday night and it was not busy yet. They have a free shuttle available to go to Wild games. The menu is not huge. My lamb special was delicious, to my taste. The serving was huge - 4 chops, along with potatoes and vegi's. My husband had a saffron risotto dish he thought was ""out of this world""! Prices were very decent for what we got. The wine prices were good. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Service Cons: Parking ok. tight lot, Table flowers ??? more

Upscale Downtown Dining for Less 10/19/2002

Good food and great ambiance but restaurant was out of the way. Not many diners for a Saturday night. Wine suggested was from Argentina, not Italy. Service was excellent- attentive and very courteous. The gnocchi with tomato sauce was a bit bland but the canneloni entree was very good. Prices seemed high but were quite reasonable compared to other upscale downtown restaurants. Pros: Live music, Authentic entrees Cons: Expensive, Out of the way more

Please try this restaurant! 10/12/2002

Please find and try this restaurant! Downtown St. Paul needs these kind of great restaurants. We live and work in the downtown area and are surprised to find this restaurant empty on some nights. We had the pasta bar and it was great! We even had our 5 yr. daughter with and she enjoyed being able to choose her dinner. The wait staff was good, albeit a little inattentive when it came to the details but it was not bad. The music was great and where else can you get lounge music like that in the cities?? Pros: The Building, The Food, The Location Cons: Prices, Wine List, Smoking more

Owner Message
  • Inspired by a lifelong dream, visionary and current owner Diane J. Mattaini opened the doors of Trattoria da Vinci in the fall of 1999 with one goal in mind. She wanted to offer her guests the opportunity to experience truly authentic Italian dining without ever leaving Minnesota.

Trattoria is the home of the famous pasta bar for both lunch and dinner. Call and inquire about our daily specials. Our signature dish is the Gamberoni Portofino. Fantastic jumbo shrimp sauteed in a brandy cream sauce, with portabella mushrooms and asparagus with the chef's choice of vegetables.

A great, romantic ambience will give you a sense of walking into old Italy.

Try our appetizer Frittura Mista which features calamari, shrimp, scallops, and sliced vegetables, lightly floured and fried. Mention CS RES when making a reservation please.
