3 months ago, I decided that I needed to lose weight and get back into shape. I started looking into BJJ schools in the area when I found Training Grounds. I enrolled in the 30-day free program. After the first class, I signed up. Everyone there was super friendly and made you feel like part of the team. I've already lost 10 pounds and am in better shape than when I was in my early 20's. Master Will and all of the coaches are really hands on and are always there to help your game. Come and check it out!!! more

I came to training grounds looking to rebuild my strength after being brutally attacked and found so much more then i ever expected. This place not only pushes you to succeed and do your best but your in such a comfortable zone and surrounded by people who are always there to help you out no matter what. The training is taught so well and they make sure you learn everything correctly and make you feel great when you get it right. Your not just in a class and learning, you feel a part of something more. I would recommend anyone to this place, i love it there. more

I signed my 5 year old son up for Little Ninjas in August after being referred by a friend who trains BJJ and sends his son there. Although we have to drive 20-30 minutes each way, it is completely worth it. Master Wil is AWESOME with the kids, seamlessly blending the life skills with the mat skills while instilling discipline, focus, respect and manners, among others. Everyone is friendly and the kids have fun and make friends while learning. Besides seeing improvements in my son's behavior in general since August, I personally have seen the results of Master Wil's program most recently at my son's parent/teacher night at school. October's theme is CONTROL and my son has been working hard to earn this stripe. When we received a progress report in the first week of October showing a deficiency in CONTROL, I was horrified. However, when we finally sat with the teacher this week, she said that his CONTROL has GREATLY improved. I asked if the improvement had been since the beginning of the month and she said ""Well, yes as a matter of fact."" It doesn't get much better than that! I will be signing up my 9 year old for the Junior Warriors when football season ends next month and I look forward to partnering with Wil to make some positive changes in his life also. more

I started training at Training Grounds about two months ago, and love it there. The instruction is top notch. Wil teaches with a curriculum that I have found to be much more sensible and easy to learn with than I have experienced at other schools. I am able to learn moves there much more easily than ever before. This makes a huge difference to me.\r \r The atmosphere at Training Grounds is ego free. I have not come across any bad attitudes there at all. This makes it easy to learn there. I would recommend it to anybody. more

My 4 year old son started his Little Ninja class with Wil at Training Ground 2 months ago. Let me start by saying it's about 30 minutes' drive for us and I've certainly looked into similar facilities close by but none is comparable. Wil is not only a master of his trade, he has a talent communicating with little kids. My son is not only learning Jiu Jitsu skills, but has benefited tremendously from the monthly life skill chart (monthly theme such as appreciation, commitment, manner). Yesterday my son has a minor fever but none of us can talk him into not going to his Little Ninja class. He told us it's a commitment (he learned it in his Training Ground class) and he had to do it. more

Training Grounds is the best place to train jiu-jitsu and MMA in Bergen county. I can say this because before I found TG I was searching the area and tried just about every school I could in the area. Not being happy with any of the instruction or level of practitioners, I found myself trying a class at Training Grounds and signing up after only my first class. The world class curriculum and atmosphere that Professor Wil Horneff has created is second to none. Aside from that un like most Black Belt instructors, he will actually train with you. Training Grounds is a friendly, ego-free academy and I am very thankful to have found a place I can call home. more

training grounds jiu-jitsu and mma changed my life. when i walked in the door i was 360 pounds at a low point in my life and being told by my doctors that if i didn't lose weight i would require all types of medicines and even surgery to prevent future health problems. after just one year training at training grounds i lost over 100 pounds my flexibility and strength are better then they have ever been and best of all a clean bill of health from my doctor. not to mention a new found confidence that i can not only protect myself but my family as well. more

Training Grounds is the best Brazillian Jiu Jitsu & MMA academy in Northern New Jersey by far. I've been training at Training Grounds Jiu Jitsu and MMA for about a year now and I can honestly say that it's changed my life. The head instructor, Wil, has an excellent curriculum that caters to both beginners in the martial art and advanced athletes. He has won multiple world-level tournaments himself and is one of the *very* few instructors that will train with the students consistently. His teaching style is very detailed and engaging which makes it really easy to understand the often complicated techniques that he teaches. Wil is also a great guy and his personality is reflected in the kind of atmosphere in the academy. Everyone there is super friendly and has a great attitude. If you are interested in training BJJ, MMA or learning self defense AND are in the area, you owe it yourself to come in for a class at Training Grounds. more

My four year old son goes to Little Ninjas. We enrolled him to keep him active and get some exercise. Little did we know how much more there is than just that. The effect these classes have had on his behavior and discipline is immeasurable. There is so much more to this than just two 45-minute sessions a week. They are given ""homework"" if they want to advance to the next patch, or next belt. The homework provides for motivation and behavioral lessons all week long. Master Wil and Coach Dave are amazing with these kids. My son counts the days to his next lesson, and always want to please his coaches. I am quite confident that I will continue to take my son to Training Grounds as long as he wants to keep going. They have programs that allow the children to progress from a young age, to pre-teen, into adulthood. I truly want my son to grow up with TG in his life. more

Both our sons are attending Jiu-Jitsu classes with Master Will at Training Grounds and they absolutely love it as do we! We've seen such an improvement in the past 2 months since they've joined this program, not only in their martial arts skills, but in their overall behavior and demeanor. Master Will teaches them lessons in leadership, anti-bullying and how to put 100% effort in everything they do. They seem to focus better, listen to instructions better and show more respect to others. We are very pleased with this program and plan to continue coming here for as long as our kids enjoy it! more

My 7 yr old daughter and 5 year old son both attend. Both love the classes and Master Will. My son is deaf and Master Will and the coaches have gone out of their way to help train him. We could not be more happy with the Training Grounds and believe the discipline and self defense skills learned are incredibly improtant for any child. You will not find a more friendly atmosphere or a more skilled teacher in the area. You should def. check it out for your kids as well ! more

I have been at Training Grounds for almost 3 years now and every day I go is still a new adventure. If you want to learn jiu jitsu from one of the top guys around, Wil is the guy to learn from. His teaching method is very easy to learn from. Not only do you learn the art of jiu jitsu, but you learn how to perform it with your own style. The group of people I train with there are great friends. I would have never met so many different kinds of people have it not been for TG. It is a great place for people of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. If u want to compete, there are a group of guys who do competitions including myself and we always place in top spots. If you just want a workout there there are plenty of jiu jitsu and MMA classes to take. TG and the people in it bring out the best side of you inside and out of the gym. One thing I can guarantee you if you come is you will get a workout of your life and leave the mats wanting more. more

Coming from an experienced and a legitimate karate background, it is my honor to say that Master Wil & all the Coaches are one of a kind - positive, experienced, motivating, confident and have a genuine desire to help people become better all around individuals. We put our son in TG and are more than happy - Our son loves it and enjoys the atmosphere, other students and the way TG is designed overall. Master Wil is top notch and by far an exceptional leader. He makes everyone feel comfortable and part of a Team! Best of the Best ~ Jerome more

I have two sons in the jr. warriors class. They both enjoy it very much. They are learning discipline and the idea of working toward something to achieve a goal. Master Wil is great with the kids and shares life lessons as well the practical application of self-defense skills. more

We have two young sons both are enrolled in classes (little ninjas & junior warriors) with Master Wil, Coach Dave & Coach Harry. From day one... Seeing Master Wil and the other instructors & how they interact with each child as an individual, they take the time to teach them the tools needed to build confidence to face challenges, but more importantly, they take the time to really listen to the children. I have found that what is taught here to these kids is not just ""jujitsu"" or ""mma"" he (Master Wil) is truly teaching them life skills. Tools they will need to make good choices going forward. To be good, confident, caring, compassionate citizens. My kids are learning in an environment which keeps them engaged, encourages them to help themselves as well as others. I can say without hesitation that having my children train under Master Wil is one of the best decisions I have made to date. Not everyone is blessed with the ability to truly make a difference. Training Grounds has made a significant difference in the life of our family. more

Training Grounds is definitely the best place around if you want to learn Jiu-Jitsu/MMA. When we learn moves in class, the instructors come around to ever single person, and make sure that they are doing it right and understand it. Also, the atmosphere here is just great. Everybody here is cool and friendly. I look forward to coming here every time because i know that i am going to get a good workout, have fun and improve. Even if you aren't really serious about learning Jiu-Jitsu/MMA its still a great place to come to get a good workout, and get in shape. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to learn MMA in general, and to anyone who wants to get a good workout, make new friends, and have fun. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/11/2013

Training Grounds is a great MMA gym for a few reasons. First, the coaching is second to none. Master Wil and the other coaches give personal attention to all their students during each class. Next, Training Grounds has such a great atmosphere. Whether you are a complete beginner or a competition level martial artist, everyone is treated the same. Last, from going to classes a few times a week I feel so much healthier and stronger than before. Each class is definitely a great workout. I would recommend Training Grounds to any MMA competitor or anyone who just wants to give MMA a try! more

This is a great place to learn MMA, if it is either Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai kickboxing or Krav maga. Small classes where you can ask questions and have open discussions. They will help you train around injuries. It has a great atmosphere, great people. Certainly a place you would like to check out If you are just starting or just searching to hone your skills. more
