Great Art, Great Event Space 4/16/2006

My husband and I got married here in October 2005, and it was the most amazing space. It's an old Torpedo Factory (hence the name) that has been transformed into dozens of artists' galleries. You can find all sorts of art here: modern art; landscapes; jewelry; sculpture, etc. There's pretty much something for everyone! It's open every day from 10-5, and it's completely free. more

Torpedo Factory Art Center 10/13/2005

The Torpedo Factory Art Center is located in Old Town Alexandria near the waterfront, in a converted torpedo factory. Now, it is the home to over 75 art studios and shops. Browse through to see what the artists are creating, make a purchase, or sign up for a class. On weekends especially, it is packed with people strolling through this part of the DC area. more

The best art center in a former torpedo factory, bar none 8/17/2005

The name refers to the building's previous use, but, in a nod to Andy, it is something like an art factory, too, which is a nice change from the sort of pretentious white walled contemporary art galleries that disconnect you from the artist. Many of the artists work on the premisis. Some of the art is of the street-fair variety, but that's all part of the experience. Good for families. more

Wild place to visit 7/29/2005

Hundreds of artists rent spaces in this old factory, and you can walk into each space and watch them at work. The styles range from traditional (you might see the like on the Saturday Evening Post cover) to stuff that just defies explanation- 'art' made of garbage, 'jewelery' made so that you can't actually wear it, etc. The art is for sale, and the place is a really cool day trip- it'll take half a day to see everything more
