Best Pizza in SF 12/7/2005

As native right coaster, it's hard to find satisfying pizza joints on the west but Tommaso's comes pretty close. It's located right in North Beach but slightly removed from all the touristy restaurants. Most nights there is a wait but it's worth it if you crave the thin crust pizza they are known for. I recommend the Pepperoni as well. The meat is exceptional quality. While the restaurant is small they can accommodate groups of around 10 or 12 but you'd need to call to reserve that. Afterward, head to Tony Nik's for a night cap just down the hill also in North Beach. more

  • When the Naple-born Cantalupo family first opened their restaurant in San Francisco's North Beach in 1935, it brought the first wood-fired brick oven to the West Coast and served closely-guarded Neapolitan recipes that their family had been passing down for generations. Decades of success later, the Crotti family took over ownership and vowed to continue the tradition of delicious food and the warm, family-focused Italian hospitality that the Cantalupos had built their foundation on. Somewhere along the line, a beloved North Beach Italian restaurant became a San Francisco institution, and the rest is history! Whether its the fresh antipasto, classic lasagna, or famous wood-fired brick oven pizza, pair it with a glass of wine and youll taste the tradition in every sip and bite.

  • The Scene
A long row of squeezed-together tables running down the middle of this venerable eatery make Tommaso's a great choice for large groups--or tourists who don't mind getting to know their neighbors. For a little more privacy, ask for one of the high-backed booths tucked against the walls. In front of the kitchen, an old brick oven still does full-time pizza duty.

    The Food
This is the Italian food everyone knows and loves: Chewy thin-crust pizza, spaghetti with meatballs, fried calamari, clams with white wine and garlic, veal parmigiana served with a side of rigatoni. Spinach pizza may sound like a cruel way to make the kids eat their vegetables, but it's actually fantastic: A standard cheese-and-tomato pie is topped with a brilliant-green layer of fresh, garlicky spinach leaves, which melt down from the heat of the hot-from-the-oven pie.
