  • To make sure your winter roof installation goes off without a hitch and the job gets done properly, read these tips and tricks for installation and advantages of winter roofing projects. First and foremost, ensure the temperature is above freezing on the day of installation. An installer unfamiliar with handling shingles in cold temperatures can cause shingles to crack which leads to future leaks and costly repairs. In cold temperatures, it is imperative to stack the shingles flat (not draped over the ridge cap) to prevent folds in the material. Try to install during days with minimal wind - high winds can damage shingles and significantly delay the installation process. We like a calm day allowing the shingles to relax and prevent blowoffs. Generations before us would not install roofs during winter months as they believed the shingles would not seal correctly, which was correct; however, the only shingles available then were 3-tab shingles. An architectural shingle will relax and seal to around 65%, the remaining 35% will continue to seal when temperatures return to the 70-degree range. After a winter installation, some of the shingles will not lay flat immediately. The shingles should flatten within 2 - 3 weeks. For those who are cost-conscious; roofing projects are less expensive in the winter. Roofing companies are slower during winter months and tend to price projects lower than when all roofing companies are in high demand. A professional installer is familiar with roofing in the winter; they know how to start compressors in the cold, prevent hoses from freezing, and know to drain the lines daily. Another advantage to winter roofing is the temperature reduces the chance of an installer nailing too deep, called a blow through, causing fractures within the shingle and leaving holes. This is more common with inexperienced roofers during s
