The Scene
African art and pictures of civil-rights leaders adorn the walls of this one-room neighborhood restaurant. Soul music from the '70s reverberates softly in the background at this east-side eatery.
The Food
While they "specialize in bar-b-q," other entr?es include pork chops, Buffalo fish, T-bone steak and chitterlings. The whole pan-fried catfish?--sans head--is flaky with a light cornmeal breading, and the fried chicken is crispy and flavorful outside, moist and tender inside. The eclectic mix of sides that accompany meals includes green beans with small ham chunks, black-eyed peas, a subtly sweet and sour slaw, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and candied yams. The smoked pork ribs are tender with a light glaze of barbecue sauce, and the rib tips are meaty and succulent. A basket of fresh rolls or cornbread comes with meals, and standard condiments include pepper sauce, vinegar and a mason jar of pickled jalape?o chiles.
