Here you can learn about the history of whaling, mainly on Long Island. There are several small exhibits to see, including a 19th century whaleboat with original gear, ship models, and art. There a few education classes about whales and whaling. This is more of a place for school kids. If you are into boating or fishing, then this may be for you. more

Learn About Whaling 8/17/2005

Now days whaling is unpopular, but in it's day it was important to the economy of long Island. It was the major industry of Cold Spring Harbor and also the first racially integrated American industry. This small museum houses a large collection of scrimshaw (the whalers form of folk art. Also featured is a fully rigged whale boat and lots of documents and correspondence which give you a real feeling for the time and the people who lived then. more
