Beautiful hidden sanctuary 12/14/2009

This resort is like a hidden sanctuary within Newport Beach. I did not stay at the resort, I just went their to explore and have a drink during sunset. Upon entering the resort, I was greeted with the warmest, most welcoming smiles. The decor, smell and music was so soothing and sophisticated. We had a glass of wine poolside overlooking the golf course and the ocean. The food and wine is pricey, but it is worth it for a special and truly unique experience. Pros: atmosphere, tranquility, service Cons: price more

beautiful resort, great massages, but showers suck 11/23/2009

i was very disappointed that such a fancy place that costs so much would have the worst showers ever -- \r the head has almost no water holes and no water pressure. most people, including myself, like to shower after getting massaged.\r \r the massages are great. Pros: great massages Cons: showers have no pressure so you can't wash off more

Unbelievable staff and accomodations! 6/7/2009

Pelican Hill Resort is heaven on earth! The staff are upbeat, friendly and helpful. Food is marvelous. The rooms are extraordinary. The spa is top-notch with excellent massage practitioners. Mario, one of the spa attendants is amazing; so helpful and professional. Treat yourself to a wonderful time here! Pros: Staff, rooms, food, overall attitude of resort. Cons: None. more

The best bar in Newport! 12/19/2008

Great entertainment on Thurs- Sat in the lounge. The singer, Andrea Miller, is top notch, and backed by piano and bass. Great food and great ambiance! Incredible place to watch the sunset. Highly recommended! Pros: Gorgeous setting more

Great live entertainment 12/19/2008

Best entertainment in Newport area. Great jazz singers in the hotel main lobby. Fun DJ with 80s and 90s music in the lounge by the pool. Great singer, Andrea Miller in The Grill on the golf course Thursday thru Sat. Gorgeous Spanish guitarists every night in Andrea Ristorante--amazing food!\r Pros: incredibly beautiful Cons: none! more

Looks and feels like a private club 9/6/2008

Finally! Pelican Hill is back and I got to play the Ocean North Course with friends last week. What a difference from two years ago. For a public course, this sure looks and feels like a private club to me!I""ve never seen facilities like this for women before. Not only did they have terrific Nike clubs for me to rent, but the five sets of tees let me play to my skill level on every hole- I'm still relatively new to the game so the forward tees were a big help. I actually felt like I could compete with the other players! The course was breathtaking. Fazio has done some great work here - visibility is much improved and the ocean views are amazing. Best of all was the ladies lounge: in a word, wow. Thought I was at a spa! There were even big-screen TVs in the louge where I hung out and waited for my friends to finish dressing before we went to dinner. I'm told they do yoga for golfers here, too. Next time, maybe a lesson's in order....\r \r Upside: Finishing the day with a Mojito on the terrace at Pelican Grill, watching the sunset. A picture-perfect day.\r \r Downside: The Pro Shop!!! I spent WAAAY too much on some great new golf clothes. So now I can look the part of a pro golfer, even if I don't always play up to par! more

Awsome golf and the frechries and Smokey Ketchup Rock! 7/31/2008

If it has been several years or more since you played Pelican Hill Golf Club, you are going to be delighted by the changes. The club was closed for two years for a complete redo and the results are impressive. The courses previously were very highly rated but now they are among the best on the California coast, and while the old clubhouse and practice facilities were high quality the new ones are really topnotch. \r \r What struck me most about the both the North and South courses was how much more open they are. With the adjustments to the landscaping, virtually every time you swing a club you?re looking into a gorgeous ocean view. The better playability was very apparent as well due to the many physical improvements and upgrades to the courses, including sand-capping high-traffic area; rebuilding tees with a new sand base as well as adding new tees; adding bunkers, and even expanding collars so you have greater choice on how to play shots near the greens.\r \r At the old club, the practice area was far from the clubhouse. The new practice area not only is right outside the clubhouse door but a vast improvement. It mimics an actual hole and conditions on the courses, so it?s perfect warm-up for the 18 holes to come. Then you set off in your cart right from the practice area to the first tee of either course.\r \r The Grill that evening was a delight, the service spectacular and the fries and smokey ketchup Rock! Pros: I could not ask for a better day Cons: I lost too many pro v 1's more

Great course, Snotty Restaurant 3/1/2004

One of the most beautiful course I have ever played, and the staff/service is really fantastic (for $250 it outta be). Great place to take guests. Play the M-Th twilight for $99 if you can - its the best deal. The outside patio is a great place for lunch or a drink after golf, nice food, beautiful views and pleasant service. The Club restaurant indoors is quite different, major attitude and rude service. They make you feel totally unwelcome unless you are staying at the hotel, have a made a reservation, and show up finely dressed and ready to drop major $$. Not place to drop in and have a beer after golf. Cant comment on the food since I havent eaten there, but I presume it is good. Pros: Beautiful Course, Great Views, Nice Service Cons: , Restaurant Attitude more

Great - but overpriced 10/3/2003

Weekend rate of $250 is way overpriced for what you get, but it is a nice course with great ocean views. Actual ""ocean holes"" - those right alongside the ocean - are actually pretty disappointing in terms of the golf so just enjoy the view. Course is always in great shape (should be for the money!!) and normally plays fairly fast (again, it should for the money!). If you want to blow too much money and have great scenery then give it a try, but the golf isn't much better than the other OC courses. Pros: VIEWS, Course condition, pace of play Cons: PRICE, golf just okay, restaurant isn't good more
