The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Awesome place! My wife and I were planning on passing right through Kansas City not thinking there would be any major attractions that we'd want to see, until Yelp came to the rescue! We saw the high reviews so we stopped and had to see what all the fuss was about! So in case it hasn't already been stated a million times, the best thing is that this place is FREE! Absolutely 100% FREE! Woohoo! The next big thing you're going to see when looking at this place is the giant shuttlecocks! All the pictures don't do these guys justice, they're pretty cool! And once you get inside, there's some very nice artwork by some very well known artists even I was able to recognize way back from hearing those names and seeing their work in art history, haha. The Egyptian exhibit was also very cool and was surprising to see at a free museum. Overall this was a great place to stop in! Definitely a great little unexpected gem on our road trip! more

This art museum is wonderful. The outside landscape just makes you want to turn off the road and jump right into the building. For the average person who might not appreciate art like others, the museum is very easy to navigate through and offers many different styles from many different cultures. The inside "plaza" area is a great place to sit and have lunch after browsing though the collections. My favorite part of the museum is the "modern" art section. The big corn on the cob work still sticks in my head. A very great outing for yourself or family. more

The Nelson Atkins is a great place to go for an afternoon of cultural and intellectual stimulation. While it's not the top art museum in the country, it houses an impressive array of both paintings and material culture. You can easily spend a morning and afternoon wandering around the galleries. Admission is by donation, so there's no huge entrance fee. The lawn art is pretty funny. They move the giant birdies throughout the year, so keep an eye on them! more

Judging by the enormous shuttlecocks on the front lawn, the Nelson Atkins is an art museum to be reckoned with. I consider myself a connoisseur of museums, and I was thoroughly impressed with the Nelson Atkins. It's not a huge museum, but it is quite impressive for what it is-- a regionally-known showcase of international art. It does have traveling exhibits, but I enjoyed its permanent collection more. Galleries are small though, so crowds do tend to build up by mid-afternoon. I especially liked the collection of ceramics and porcelain; while they seemed out of place in their setting, I loved them as a nice change of pace from your standard "paintings on wall" approach. Bravo, Nelson-Atkins! Also, be sure to check out the museum café, which features what looks to be a delicious weekend brunch! more

This is the largest art museum in the Kansas City area. The building itself is beautiful. They usually have an interesting display out on the large front lawn. The museum has all types of artwork as well as sculptures and artifacts. They have classic artwork by famous artists such as Monet. They usually have some type of temporary display that is interesting. There is also a small cafe where you can have lunch or snacks. The admission is only several dollars and well worth it. more

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a great art museum in the downtown area of Kansas City. I don't really no anything about art, but I do know that they have a great collection of all sorts of different art works. I can go and spend hours by myself looking around at all of the art. I makes me feel like I have a little culture. more

If your crazy about the girl, who happens to be at least somewhat intelligent, this is a superb place for a date. You'll get in beautiful works of art, and have enough time to laugh at a few, and get into some nice deep discussions. My favorite place to go for inspiration. Kansas City is pretty big on Art. The Nelson is neat because they have different kinds of art, from old to modern. Under almost each piece of art, you can find a story about the work. If you never been, it's a definite must see in K.C. They have a restaurant inside too, in case you get hungry from walking around. On Fridays, admittance is free. more

Nelson atkins museum of art is obviously located in the art district of kansas city. Even if you don't go into the museum, the area is just beautiful. It has many older homes that are so nice, and the area around the museum itself is kept up well, and there are a few pieces of "lawn" art as well. Nelson has great yearly exhibits that are usually more for adults than children. It just isn't soemthing kids would generally be excited about. more

This museum is full of Asian, European, and American Art. They also house some unique sculptures both inside and outside the museum. The ones outside you can not miss it is a site to see for your own eyes. The museum has many exhibits located in different rooms which makes it easier to look at if you don't want to look in a huge room full of things you can always come back and view the rooms you missed out on that day. This museum isn't as large as some, but it carries a lot of beautiful and interesting pieces that keep people coming back. more

This is the best museum in the midwest, and one of the top ten in the country. The Nelson Atkins museum of fine art always has something you didn't see before, and such beautiful works. The exhibits are great, and the "lawn art" is ironic and flattering to the eye. Cheap and fun this is a great place for child and adults. more

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is nothing compared to any big museum in New York or Chicago. There really aren't any big name paintings because KC isn't a big market for art. I would definitely not bring kids because looking at paintings will get really old with them. I do not remember how much it is, so I cant comment on the price range. more

This is a great museum in Kansas City, by the plaza. The building itself is just as cool as the stuff inside. It's really old and it seems like an old church or something from Europe. They have famous stuff in there, a Van Gogh and quite a few Monets. They have various sections, like an egypt section with really old stuff, and asian section, a christianity section, and an african section. There is a resturaunt in there too but it's really expensive and I've never eaten there. The admission is free! more

The Nelson is a art museum in Kansas City, MO. I haven’t been there in a couple years, but if it is anything like it was then, then your aren’t missing out on anything. It was not much fun, and they don’t many famous pieces of art. I would not suggest the Nelson unless you really like art. I don’t remember the prices so I can’t comment on that. 1 Star more
