This place has become my favorite coffee spot in New York and just an all around great place to hang out or meet up with people in The East Village. The espresso is delicious and very flavorful, not particularly bitter like some burnt "meh" coffee you get around town. I love the traditional presentation, strong short double shot with beautiful crema, served in a very Italian brown ceramic cup - complete with tiny spoon and a little cookie or other bonus treat. The decor is unusual for a New York cafe, it is ultra cozy and homey, in a spooky dollhouse kinda way. I like it! They have cool plates! The staff is all really, really nice. Weird! They also really know their stuff and seem quite serious about coffee. I recently discovered their cold-brewed iced coffee which has a delicious mellow almost chocolate-y flavor. Man, that is good stuff!! It is also supercharged caffeine-wise!! Oh yeah!!!! What's up with the rabbits? Almost forgot, the affogato (espresso over gelato) is a real treat. They also have these amazing mini bundt-cake-lookin' pastries called canelle (sp?). Yum. Pros: Great coffee, Cozy atmosphere, Great service. Cons: Sometimes crowded. more

Service and Espresso is Amazing 2/27/2009

I was here just last thursday afternoon, and i had the best shot of espresso since my last visit to family in Amsterdam. I watched the sweet young lady behind the counter make it, she understood what she was doing and she was carefully detailed. I read the other reviews, and "amihaly" must have spiked her espresso with vodka to dilute herself into thinking the employees are a bother. "amihaly" should have been having her own conversation instead of eaves dropping, maybe then she wouldn't have been so insecure and felt the need to complain publicly. Anyway, great experience, this is my spot now that I'm back in NY for good... more

I was in there earlier today and had the best cappuccino. The guy with the glasses who served me was totally sweet, and every time Ive been in, I experience the same kind of service. more

Local Coffee Shop + Exquisite Espresso = Sold 2/1/2009

The service at the Mercury Dime makes you feel more like family than a customer, which is rare in New York. I find everyone here consistently delightful. The Mercury Dime is a wonderful alternative to corporate coffee shops. It's a great place to meet up with a friend, read a book or do some work while enjoying an exquisite esspresso drink. One of the very few authentic coffee shops in New York City. Pros: charming, cozy ambience Cons: small more

The Dime 2/1/2009

Wow.... is a harsh personal attack really warranted here? Seems a bit extreme. I visit the Dime frequently and I've actually noted that this employee seems to really care about her customers. Anyway, I highly recommend an afternoon trip to the Mercury Dime. Highest quality espresso in the entire city. more

I like, very much 1/7/2009

This is amazing coffee and really cozy. I recommend for a quick sit-down while strolling the East village. Don't expect expert service, but also, don't expect the starbucks crows. Yummy cookie comes with your espresso! Pros: Small, unknown, Cons: spotty service more

  • In Short
After the local community board put the kibosh on co-owners Sasha Petraske (of Milk and Honey fame) and T.J. Siegal's wine-bar plans, the duo instead transformed their bi-level haunt into a caffeinated, computer-welcome hangout. The space has been outfitted with a massive copper-framed picture window and, more importantly, a premium Faema E61 espresso machine for pumping out super-charged macchiatos made with Queens-roasted Dallis Coffee. Fresh-squeezed juices help wash down a slender selection of sandwiches and sweets, including a roasted banana drizzled with chocolate and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
