Nothing but Perfection 10/1/2006

Originally opened in the 19th century as a "pleasure palace" for men, the Mainstay Inn was nothing but perfection when we stayed there. From the picket fence to the grounds to the veranda outside all the way to the masterfully restored and exquisitely decorated interior, a night at this inn will not disappoint you. We arrived just in time for afternoon tea, which is served daily. We were offered finger sandwiches (my favorite was the cream cheese on datenut bread), fresh fruit, cookies and hot or cold tea. It was so much to eat that we only had snacks for dinner. We stayed in the President Harrison Room for two reasons. First, it was one of the least expensive rooms and secondly, it is named after President Benjamin Harrison who is a many-times great grandfather of my mother's. Although narrow, the original high ceilings made the room feel big. It was filled with gorgeous Victorian antiques including one of the most beautiful tall headboard beds I've ever seen. There was also a gorgeous burled armoire. The bathroom was almost uncomfortably large and contained the original tub and pedestal sink, as well as a modern shower. A delicious and filling sit-down breakfast was included with our night's stay, after which we were on the road again. ~~~~~ For rates and availability see http://www.mainstayinn.com/mainstay.htm more
