Best

The fresh fish and tender chicken fingers at this lovely, authentic chipper is definitely worth the short trip on the 7 train from Manhattan (or a trip on the BQE if you're coming...

Good food. Might be little on the oily side for some. Way better than Authur's. Pros: Cheap, Fresh, old favorite more

You've got to be kidding. 8/12/2003

I live down the block from this place. I have no doubt that this place serves up "authentic" style British food. However, there is a good reason why Americans joke about that "cuisine". If you love greasy stomach churning over fried food then you have found your heaven on earth. Cons: The food, The food, The food more

Its sorta OVERRATED 8/7/2003

I just visited the Chipper yesterday and I must say that 2 people ordered food for less than $20. The bad part is that you get soooo little for what you pay. In a way, you don't quite get what you pay for. Fish and chips were good, but I could get more bang for the buck somewhere else. By the way, the cook was smoking and I thought that was a little rude especially since I don't. Pros: Good food Cons: Pricey more

Fish & Chips 8/6/2003

My idea of what this place was like was totally different from what it was. The decor is contemporary with comfortable wooden stools and eating ledge. The fries and batter burger were filling and good, not any seasoning going on. Though the prices were resonable, I still think they are a tad bit over-priced. The service was great, very friendly. more

The Chipper 7/2/2003

The fresh fish and tender chicken fingers at this lovely, authentic chipper is definitely worth the short trip on the 7 train from Manhattan (or a trip on the BQE if you're coming from Brooklyn). Once you taste the fresh cod, there's no denying that they certainly serve "fresh food fast." Pros: Inexpensive, Convenient Cons: Only one in NY more

About time!!!!!!!!!! 6/22/2003

It's about time someone started distributing the elusive culinary delight of chips and gravy to this standard. The portobello mushrooms are to die for and the best thing is.. its close to the pub!! So..if you're looking for some gourmet nosh on your way home from the pub or just want to sample the national dishes of Ireland and England while on a day trip to MOMA, THIS IS THE PLACE! Pros: Good Music, Good Food, Good Times Cons: Not enough branches more

The Real Irish 5/13/2003

This place is an unexpected find - and well worth staying on the 7 train one more stop past MOMA to check out. The Fish & Chips that are served hot and fresh in the Irish way by a friendly Irish staff. Food is served piping hot and aromatic of salt and vinegar - yum! (They'll even throw in some tasty homemade tartar sauce). (The sausages are a bust though, they're the big bloated and rubbery British kind rather than the more flavorful and slimmer Irish versions - so avoid until the managment get wise and replace them. Pros: Authentic, Irish, Fun to visit more

Great Spot for craves... 5/8/2003

This little shop, with it's sparse decor and bright lights, serves up mouth watering fried cod or haddock and perfect chips. They also have "Mushy peas" and fried burgers too. But stick with the standard fish and chips (cod) and you don't be dissapointed. Some of the best in the city. It's more a take out place than a restaurant. Pros: Great food, Fast service, Cheap Cons: No tables more

Best Fish and Chips ever! 3/12/2003

Having read and heard plenty about the chipper over the past months I finally made the trip to Queens Blvd last weekend and it was worth the trip. This is without question the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life. I don't remember the fish and chips in England being this good. The place is very cool with hip lighting, design and great music. The staff were exceptionally friendly and the menu made my mouth water. I had the battered cod on the recommendation of the server - but I'm going this weekend for the haddock. When is the Manhattan store opening??Also next door is a bar called Blooms - must be NYC's best kept secret! Pros: Inexpensive, Great food, cool athmosphere more

The real authentic Fish & Chips 1/30/2003

As a fish lover, I tasted the fish & chips of many cities including London, and I now found one of the best authentic, light batter fish and tasty chips places in New York City, served by real Englishmen. They must have their mother's recipe. Pros: Inexpensive, Munimeter parking Cons: only one location more

I'm Chipper 1/17/2003

For the best catch of the day in any NY burrough stop in at the Chipper. Being native to Ireland i was skeptical there could be authentic fish and chips west of Dublin ! But lo and behold, here it is mate! Bloody Hell, it's East of the Hudson, only seven stops on the seven train from Grand Central Station. It's worth the trip. Pros: Fresh, Clean, Tasty more

  • The Scene
The Chipper's clean white facade stands out on this corner of Queens Boulevard flanked by gas stations and overshadowed by the elevated tracks. Inside, clean, smart design persists, in the spare single room and in the graphics. Business is mostly takeout, but there are a couple of tables.

    The Food
A good batter, the most important factor in delicious deep-frying, makes the fish and chips here top-notch. Diners choose between firmer cod and milder haddock, or smoked cod for a couple of dollars more. The mild brown chips are wonderfully crispy outside and fluffy inside, and the fish is authentically oily and minimally seasoned. Batter-fried chicken strips, sausages, and even a burger are also available; the pale, bland sausage is pleasingly exotic to American tastebuds. Chicken curry's subtle spice contrasts nicely with the rest of the menu; with chips to sop up the sauce, it's even better.
