Burger fraud 12/22/2010

We ordered brugers from the Alexandria location to take home. When we got home and opened the bags, we discovered that they don't use brioche buns as advertised! It was just a regular lame sesame seed hamburger bun. We went there, in part, because we love brioche. For a restaurant to specifically adverstise a product and charge for a clearly inferior product is fraud. Add to that their burgers were WAY TOO SALTY! Forget it and go elsewhere. Besides, other burger places have better fries... more

A little burger with your salf? 10/13/2010

We've gone to this place two times. That's it for the trials. The BGR burger joint off of Exit 72 (from 66) salts their burgers to the point of no return. Fries are okay, but really... Not worth the money, not worth the wait, not worth the attitude. more

Needs improvement... 10/11/2010

I don't mind paying good money for good food...and good service. The burgers were good, not outstanding. They are a good size, but not enormous. The service...at least you get a freindly smile at the Mc’D’s drive through once in a while. The person taking our order had an impatient look on his face the entire time I was at the counter. I didn't get a smile or thank you from anyone. In this economy, I don't need to spend $35 on a couple of ok burgers and some pissy attitudes. Do they know how many other gourmet burger joints are around? And finally, why would you offer a veggie or turkey option if you are going to cook it on the same grill as red meat. It's not really vegetarian if it is swimming in the grease of red meat. more

DISGUSTING!! 10/3/2010

Figured a place that only sells burgers would have a veggie burger that is half decent. I ordered the veggie burger "Wellington" style with mushrooms and onions, topped with blue cheese, fries on the side, and a fountain drink. My tab was $15.60! Upon picking up my burger, half of it fell out of the bun and landed like a mushy pile of poo onto my plate. It was then I noticed there wasn't even any cheese present. The girl behind the counter gave me some in a little cup...so much for melted cheese. I had to eat with a fork because I was unable to pick it up, and it tasted HORRIBLE! I threw it out after two bites. The fries were just like Wendy's but $3 more expensive. I will never go back. I seriously almost threw up. more

Burger Lovers Rejoice! 8/11/2010

So when most people think of a juicy burger, Five Guys comes to mind. My friend was curious to see if BGR: The Burger Joint was comparable if not better so I offered to try it out for lunch. Having been on tv with Throwdown with Bobbly Flay and also Man vs Food, I had high expectations. They definitely lived up to the hype. It's a small burger joint in downtown Bethesda and a great lunch option for the many business people diving into their juicy burgers. The menu is much more diverse than Five Guys. You have the options of regular burgers, lamb burgers, veggie burgers, sliders, etc. They also offer regular fries, sweet potato fries, asparagus fries, and gigantic onion rings. Literally, this onion rings are over 2 inches thick, each! The best deal is the box set for $8.99 which is what I got. It comes with the option of a regular burger, veggie burger or sliders, fries and a drink. I chose the regular burger with the works meaning lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and they're special mojo sauce. I came to the conclusion that the mojo sauce is mayo with a bit of spice, maybe hot sauce?! The only downfall was the bun was not sturdy enough to support the burger and all the toppings. It was a bit of a mess but so worth it. With this chain taking off and opening new stores in NoVa, it's definitely worth a quick trip to try it out. Prices, value and the amount of food is comparable to Five Guys but BGR takes the cake! More options and better tasting burger, how could it not be the best! more

Bethesda's Burger Joint Is Jumping 5/29/2008

By Eve Zibart Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, May 30, 2008 At first glance: Although the facade is fairly modest, Bethesda's new BGR: The Burger Joint is pure eye candy inside, with royal purple walls lined with album covers from Prince, Springsteen, U2, the Cars, AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. There's even a Bon Jovi gold record. The tabletops are brightly colored mosaics that salute comfort-food favorites with the same nostalgic reverence: replicas of Nestle Quik, A.1. steak sauce, Pop Rocks and Bazooka bubble gum labels, along with the MTV logo and the Stones' lips logo. The old-fashioned grill and fry sinks are visible behind the counter. In addition to the booths and tables inside, there are outdoor tables near Veterans Park, where there is live music Thursday evenings in summer. On the menu: The name seems self-explanatory, but the Burger Joint takes a broad approach to the term. In addition to the various beef versions (double patty, cheeseburger and a truly terrifying pizza-size Frankenstein with nine pounds of meat), there are turkey, lamb, tuna and veggie versions, a direly addictive take on a classic Cuban sandwich (a burger topped with roast pork, Serrano ham, Swiss cheese and pickles), a lobster roll and grilled cheese sandwiches in four varieties. The Burger Joint makes sweet potato fries and Yukon gold fries, which can be topped with rosemary, Parmesan or garlic; onion rings are also available. The bargain lunch combo on weekdays is a burger, fries and soda for $8.99. If you can finish the monster burger, which totals more than 15 pounds with bun and toppings (and comes with a bottle of Maalox!), the house will pick up the $79.99 tab -- a financial bargain if not a dietary one. At your service: This is mostly self-serve, although when it's not crowded the staff tries to deliver the trays. A.1., ketchup, vinegar and other condiments are on side tables with the plasticware. The staff is friendly, although it is still getting the hang of semi-fast food; when workers are double-shifting at the register and the prep table, some items can be forgotten. On the table: The Burger Joint uses hormone-free aged prime beef, and it tastes like a childhood memory of Dad at the grill; the owners have even figured out a way to shape the patties without flattening out the juices. (The old-fashioned potato buns are shipped in daily from a family bakery in Philadelphia.) The Cuban is over-the-top good, although the bun, which is supposed to be grill-pressed to make it crispy like Cuban rolls, came out less than extra-crispy. The "Greek" burger, ground lamb with tzatziki sauce, cucumber, red onions and feta cheese on pita, is flavorful (like the beef and tuna, it's best ordered rare or medium rare) although a bit drippy. The tuna is impressively thick and obviously fresh, topped with grilled pineapple and a gingery spread. The turkey was ground fine, not coarse, so that it tasted more like pressed turkey than a burger, but it's good and topped with portobello mushrooms (the "hint of gorgonzola" was too subtle, however). The fries are cut on the thick side, and the cooking varies; the sweet potato fries are thin and fine. What to avoid: The monster burger, unless there's 15 of you, or even the double; the single burgers are six ounces as it is (that's 50 percent larger than a quarter-pounder). Wet your whistle: The Burger Joint regularly has Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA on tap along with a rotating second brew (currently Stella Artois); milkshakes and floats; sodas (with free cherry or vanilla syrup), lemonade, tea and Shirley Temples. Talk about nostalgia! more
