Best

I have never enjoyed reading books and magazines until now.

Worst

Don't ask to use bathroom. An obese, vulgar, alien, will curse you out. No questions asked. How could such a monster work in such a great place?

Free Books! 4/16/2006

It is pretty much a free book store. Unwanted books are donated by individuals as well as organized groups, and are sorted on shelves by volunteers into subject areas. Anyone who wants books is then able to browse the selections during their open hours and take as many books as they want for free. There are no expectations of donations of any kind, although they do have a list of needed supplies for those that would like to give something. The only stipulation is that the books cannot be sold. more

Get your free books here! 4/8/2006

The Baltimore Book Thing is a wonderful place that takes donations of books and magazines and organizes them in their "store" (which looks a lot like a library). Anyone can take whatever books they want and however many they want for FREE as long as they agree not to resell them. This keeps dealers from using it as a free stocking source. I think the guy who runs it gets grant money but they can also always use donations of other supplies to help keep them going. Check out their website to see how you can help, and then stop by and pick up a few books to read! more

Yay! Free books! 3/26/2006

Not only is this a great place to pick up some interesting reads but it's also a wonderful way to get rid of books and magazines that you know you're not going to read again but that someone else will surely enjoy. I can't bear to throw books away and it just makes me feel good to know that there's a way to get them to people who will read them. The store is well organized, quiet and clean. Check out their website to find out how to donate and what all they need besides books. Support reading! more

The Book Thing of Baltimore 2/25/2006

What's not to love about free books? This place is basically a dumping ground for the entire city's supply of used books, ranging from books that are practically new to those that are nearly falling apart. Everything is absolutely free, and the man who runs the place encourages you to take as many as you can carry. I've only been there once, but my wife used to go religiously every weekend and found quite a few treasures. It's a great place to browse and pick up a new read. more

Booktastic! 2/4/2006

It's hard to believe, but they give away free books with no strings attached. Although the books are often piled up and in disarray, the volunteers who operate this place on the weekends are very informed as to what's on their shelves. They also encourage readers to drop off old books for someone else rather than just throw them away. I've found some amazing books here, and their selection of classics is fantastic. I've even found some vintage/rare books, one from 1890! Make sure to stop by the Book Thing for a good book; the BT staff just ask that you don't resell the books you get. more

Free Books! 1/31/2006

The Book Thing of Baltimore is one of the best discoveries I've made living in Baltimore. This operation was started in order to redistribute books from people that have them to people that want them. They take donations of books from individuals, businesses, and libraries. They then sort and shelve them, and then give them away for FREE to anyone who comes. They have tens of thousands of books; everything from mathematics textbooks to Steven King novels. And every single one of them is entirely free. Every Saturday & Sunday, they're open from 9am to 6pm. Also, every Wednesday, starting at 3pm, they appreciate volunteers to help sort and shelve books. more

FREE books! 12/19/2005

Tons and tons of free books - you can browse here for hours. Make sure you clear a spot on your bookshelf at home before you go, because you'll be coming home with a huge stack of books! There are also lots of magazines, especially National Geographics. And if you have unwanted books and magazines at home, drop them off so some other lucky person can take them home! more
