Poor customer service. 5/7/2008

Have been there before several times to eat burgers at the bar and other things when they weren't so busy. Usually food and service have been fine. Tonight went with a friend to go celebrate my birthday. The bar was packed and so we were seated at a nearby table after waiting for several minutes at the host station because no one was there for a while. The bartender brought us menus and then went back to the bar. After waiting for nearly twenty minutes with no one coming back to check on us, my friend went to the bar to ask about getting some service. The bartender brusquely informed her that he was really busy and that it would be easier for him if we moved over to the bar. (Never mind that we were already seated and settled and that there wasn't really room at the bar when we came in.) We could understand that he was busy, and if told that in a polite way, I don't think we would have minded. But after coming out for what should have been a pleasant dinner, we were disappointed to be treated so rudely. After my friend told me what he said, we decided to leave since additional service would likely be slow, and if he was that rude before we even ordered, we didn't want to deal with such behavior for the rest of our meal. As we were about to go, he finally came over to ask what we wanted, and I told him we were leaving. He grabbed our menus in a huff and walked away. What should have been a happy occasion was ruined by the rudeness of the staff here, and I wouldn't recommend going or paying money for rude service like that. Why go out to eat at a place where they treat you poorly and you leave regretting that you ever went? Pros: Nice environment, sometimes good food. Cons: POOR SERVICE makes the rest not worth it. more

WATCH YOUR FINAL BILL! 5/2/2008

The soup we had was wonderful. The service reasonable. What really turned us off was that we were charged the dinner price for something that was supposed to be a ""lunch"" special but on the board outside was listed as just ""daily special"". Be careful of the bait + switch on prices at this place! This actually happened quite awhile ago but I never thought of writing a review until a friend recently suggested that she does find them helpful. We both ordered (party of 2) the whole snapper. The taste was wonderful & fresh but we got sticker shock when the bill came & we were charged nearly 3x what we should have been per the ""daily special"" price written on the board outside the restaurant. We asked for an explanation & then asked to see a manager who, were were told, was unavailable (how convenient) & also the only person who could correct the bill. How nice to see when we left a fresh wet eraser mark on the board w/the ""daily special"" erased. It took several phone messages that were unreturned, a harshly worded letter to get our money back that we were overcharged. When the manager finally called to leave a message on our voice mail that the credit was issued to our account he was rude & unapologetic. A pity, since we did enjoy the food but will never give our money to a place that was so unprofessional when asked to correct a simple mistake. Pros: GREAT CHICKEN SOUP Cons: UNPROFESSIONAL MANAGEMENT more

Great Veggie Burger 6/10/2007

My husband and I are both vegetarian and That Place has one of the best veggie burgers in the city in our opinion. They seem to only offer it on the menu at lunchtime, but our waiters have often let us order it during dinner too. The service is a bit slow, so we make a point to only go on lazy Saturday afternoons... Pros: outdoor dining, atmosphere Cons: poor service more

Food underwhelming for the price 1/13/2007

Went on a Saturday night (January 06) and it was easy to get a reservation (perhaps not a good sign); we went there as couldn't get into our first choice of restaurants (Gamekeepers etc and the Hyde Park Grille's phone was out of order). We were put in a sideroom with dark walls and avant-garde wall art and a very cramped table for four. Music was piped jazz, waiter was attentive. The starters were OK: onion soup and mussels were passable, the salads were ordinary. We ordered the special -two filet mignon with crabmeat topping and they were measly and put on top of fried bread to make the plate look larger, two tasteless roast potato slices on the side and swamped in cheese, very little crabmeat, and gravy with a large amount of salt, but the green beans were good. My son ordered a peppered, salt-encrusted New York strip steak that was thin, encrusted both sides and basically tender and OK. The almond chicken with garlic rice was tasty. Maybe we shouldn't have ordered the specials. We didn't stay and risk desserts and coffee. Bill came to about $40 per head with appetizer, entree and one glass of wine. Pros: Ambience OK, convenient University Circle location Cons: Overpriced for the quality more

nice place, but overpriced 3/7/2006

I dined here on Feb. 20th, and I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about. The food was quite good. I had the Beef Wellington, and the meat inside was perfectly tender while the pastry crust could barely have been done better. We also had the escargot, and it was at least average. The quiet atmosphere for talking and classy yet understated decor are absolutely perfect for a date. My friend went with her boyfriend back when it was ""The Flower"" (now it's ""That Place"") and found it romantic, too. The service was very polite, but really should have checked up on us a lot more. It is overpriced, but the East side is really lacking on good places at any price. If you want to test the decor but not the food, I used to see lunch specials under $5 during the summer. Pros: Wonderful decor, Good food, Nice quiet atmosphere Cons: Overpriced, Inattentive service more

i've been had!! 10/20/2005

i ventured in here after a business meeting, drawn in by the exterior. however, that was the extent of my positive experience. i was greeted by a phony server who, when she didn't think i was looking, rolled her eyes at me when i failed to order a glass of wine per her suggestion. then the food came...what a disappointment! the salmon was dry due to being overcooked and tasted as if it was caught 2 weeks ago. after sending it back to the kitchen, it came back even worse. the hamhanded ""chef"" also ruined my spinach side--it was watery & sodium infused. wisely, i skipped out on dessert, which, according to the patrons next to me, was ""not homemade"" and thus ""not worth ordering."" oh well, at least the coffee was decent! its safe to say that i won't revisit ""this place"" when i'm back in the cleveland area. Pros: dining room, location Cons: food, service, service more

For those with low expectations, numb tastebuds 8/24/2005

First the good: nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, thats it. Now, the unpleasant task of listing the bad: the food--extremely bland and unimaginative, something that can be overlooked, but not in this case as the prices are sky high; one can dine at truly upscale restaurants such as flying fig or moxie for the same amount and get delicious, exciting fare in contemporary and fun settings. My pork chops were undersized, overdone, and an insult to my palette. The house salad seems like an afterthought. Also avoid desserts: the mousse was a joke as was my wife's english trifle: tasted like betty crocker. The service was poor and unprofessional: we felt as if we were at Applebees. In summation, why go to a place where the food is subpar, the service is worse, and ambiance is merely decent when you can go to world class restaurants for the same or less money? more

If u don't expect too much on the food 6/25/2005

Tastful, cozzy environment, very plain food. The soups we had (Chicken vegetable soup/Onion soup) are so salty! The chef may empty his salt jar. more
