BAD ATTITUDE! 9/1/2010

My church group rode our motorcycles to this cafe earlier today. The owner Roger Joughlin started out by scolding our pastor's wife because she moved a table. Didn't move it next to a table, just moved it about 2 feet to give us a little more room to stand by the front door. She told him we had a group of 25 and he said ""You're gonna have to wait a long time"". His attitude was the worst of any cafe mgr I've ever met. He came back a bit later and asked again, ""how many do you have"", no smile, no warm greeting (check their website). One of the ladies in our group said ""we have a bunch"" to which he replied something smart, followed by ""if you don't like it you can leave"". Which we promptly did. One of our other members who was in the back heard him brag to his staff about ""telling the bikers to leave"". So they may have great food, but due to Rogers attitude, it's just not worth it. more

A real dissapointment 8/31/2010

My husband and i had visited The Texan when it was owned and run by 'Bud' Levell, out on 79 He is a terrific person with a huge amount of integrity and a great sense of humor. He sold the Texan to it's current owner due to some health issues. I had anticipated so much better when we revisited it after its sale and relocation to Hutto; we were terribly disappointed. I ordered the garden vegetable soup( it was the middle of August, so that tells you how much I like soup) It tasted like the vegetable scrapings from the chefs prep work, thrown into a pot and boiled to hell. My husband ordered the pot roast and mashed potatoes. He liked the pot roast, but commented to me that the potatoes had a strange taste. I tasted them and told him they had used old butter, rancid butter, something left in the walk-in for a couple of days with out a cover. When we brought it to the chef's attention his comment was ""we sell a lot of them."" I know Bud, and when I told him about this he just shook his head and sighed.Shame on you chef, for taking a Texas icon to base levels. more

Love this small town cafe!!!! 4/10/2010

I love this place. I went the first time three years ago when i first moved to Hutto and knew I made the right choice in moving here when I visited the Texan Cafe! Everytime friends and family come to visit I take them here to show them this small town hospitalilty. They have all loved it and wanted to return when visiting again. I love thier Chicken Fried Steak and Fried Green Tomatoes. I don't even like tomatoes but will eat them everytime I come here. There portion sizes are huge. The chicken fried steak is the size of your plate and the sides have to go into separate bowls becasue it is so large!!! Everything I tried here is great, especially the WIDE variety of pies! Can't go home without a slice!! I love this place and highly recommend it!!! Pros: great home cooked food Cons: not enough seating more

Excellent Home-Style Cooking 1/3/2009

I have been to the Texan Cafe multiple times since moving to Hutto. The food is down right Texan, the veggies are fresh and good, waiters/waitresses have that typical sometimes rough rural Texas charm. What we like most is the balance on the menu and that everything is made right at the Texan. If you want something light go for the salmon cesar salad, or try the BBQ, the chicken fried steak is the best in Texas. However, leave room for the pie...you don't want to miss the pie... trust me screw the diet and try it. I personally prefer the rubarb pie, like my moma used to make in Germany.....yyyyyyuuuummmmmmyy! Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Very poor service and food 11/29/2008

Don't waste your time. They are overpriced and the portions are small. Food is not good at all and the pony tailed owner is extremely rude to his customers. Go to Mario's next door if you are hungry and want something good. Cons: overpriced, rude management more

Texan Cafe At It's WORST! 11/28/2008

My family traveled all the way from South Austin to dine at This ""Best Local Diner"" . The portions were small and food was cold. When expressing concerns, the management offered NO Apology. My family was disappointed and Still Hungry when leaving Hutto. I'm Sorry for the Citizens of Hutto if this is their Claim to Fame! Cons: Everything About IT/ Ponytail Owner more

WORST CHICKEN FRIED STEAK !!!!!!!! 10/20/2008

This place has the worlds WORST CHICKEN FRIED STEAK! We came all the way from Spicewood. Figuring a small town like this would have to have some pretty good CFS. It was god awful! Portions were the size of my palm, the meat was gray, chewy, and flavorless. I wouldn't even feed that to my dog. The outter crust was soaked in a terrible gravy that was watery and again tasteless. It was truly a waste of money. They should be ashamed, I'd seriously consider taking that off the menu. Cons: Everything more

Home Town Feel 6/24/2008

Our Family goes to the Texan every Tuesday night. We even have our own table. Roger and the girls treat us like royalty. They know all of our names and have our booster seats waiting for us. I have to admit I order the salmon every single time but it us soo good. We love the fried green tomatoes and the catfish. Also they have THE BEST macaroni-n-cheese in Austin (yes better than Galaxy) and dessert ? Debbie?s Pie. There is a case full of the mot decadent things you have ever eaten. All of my friends and coworkers want to meet at the Texan for lunch. And they also have pie happy hour from 3-5 weekdays (not sure if it?s every weekday) but that?s like $3 for a big soda and pie. You can catch me and the girls there some afternoons. Pros: fried pickles Cons: sometimes they don't have enough seating more
