Tavern On Jane = Quaint... 10/1/2011

Ate here Friday September 30, 2011. We went here because we got a deal for a discount 50%off /up to $25.00 off check (site will remain unnamed). We are glad we did! It is a relatively small, well kept good looking place. There is a fireplace in a back alcove dinning area (seems great for a group/party/gathering). There are 2 waitstaff and a busboy - due to the size and flow design of the room, but all help out. Our waiter was a nice person. The discount says ""18% gratuity may be added to check"" - it was, we gave him 20%! The food selection and quality for what is described as a ""tavern"" is excellent. Our waiter recommended a wine better than the selection we were thinking of at the same price when asked to help with our possible choice. He actually had us sample the choices before agreeing to buy. I had a half a roasted chicken and switched white rice for potatoes and broccoli. It was very moist and flavorful chicken. My wife had a great fish and chips dinner with excellent tartar sauce. MUCH better than ANYTHING you could get from Salt & Battery! A REAL taste of England!! The vibe is a mix of Cheers and a New England type eatery. The exposed brick walls and the butcher paper on the tables with a glass of crayons to doodle with are a nice touch. If we lived in the neighborhood this would DEFINITELY be ""our neighborhood go to place"". We told our waiter who works Wednesday - Friday that we will see us again. Phillip & Lisa more

Great West Village Place 10/1/2010

Tavern On Jane captures everything that makes the West Village a great neighborhood. The bar, that doubles and a great restaurant, invites all to come in and have a great time. Locals and visitors can easily find a comfortable place in this friendly establishment. The food, music and conversation are all well done. During the day and for weekend brunch, it is a great place to bring the family. more

You gotta go where everybody knows your name! 12/23/2009

I was looking for cozy places in The Village to go to dinner with a good friend this past Thurs. 12.17. A fireplace was a prerequisite as the weather had recently turned frigid. I found Tavern On Jane online. I was hooked at first glance. The website pictures do not do it justice. It is a lovely old building with brick and a great wooden bar. If you are not familiar with this part of The West Village, the neighborhood looks like you have stepped back in time before cars and electricity with a warmth and charm that reminded me of something out of Dickens, or Diagon Alley. When we got there around 6 PM we were immediately greeted and seated with an apology up front for a holiday party which would crowd the place shortly. The service was attentive, the food sturdy, the holiday lights were enchanting and the atmosphere was like a rustic ""Cheers"". Everyone knew everyone and my friend and I felt very much at home. I will be back...frequently... Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Are they any? more

An old favorite gone downhill 12/19/2008

I use to love this place as a local.. It seems to have gone downhill...the specials are way overpriced and underwhelming ..and they use to be varied and excellant... and the food quality is just generally mediocre... more

Best neighborhood place! 10/5/2008

I love the Tavern on Jane. This is a great neighborhood place with the best bartenders and staff. You can always find a friendly face at the Tavern. It's a neighborhood favorite as well as a home away from home for travellers. The food is always delicious. Hats off to the owners for creating such an awesome place. more

fab spot on jane street! 9/1/2008

i LOVE this place! the service is fab, the food is delicious and reasonably-priced, the atmosphere is totally chill and there are crayons on the table. what more could you want? more

Best Neighborhood Joint 9/1/2008

This place is the Cheers of the West Village. The food is excellent (better burgers than some of the more ""famous places...and far less of a wait time for a table!!), great, friendly service, kid friendly and a great bar. In the winter the fireplace roars and makes for a cozy dinner. more

too much 4 a pint 7/25/2008

nice and cozy. Had a drink in a few area bars and had the same draft beer in each. They went from four dollars in one to SEVEN in ToJ. Pros: old school type of place Cons: can go down the street and get the same for less more

Not What It Used To Be 5/5/2008

Time for a recent review on this once terrific place. Lower quality food, barkeeps, cleanliness, and clientele make me wonder if it's under new management. If you must drop in, grab a table way in back, away from Baby Carriage Central. Steer clear of the over-priced, over-cooked nightly 'specials' in favor of a basic burger, club sandwich, or chopped salad. With so many other new dining options in the neighborhood, I can't understand why Tavern on Jane let itself go so. Pros: Kid-friendly; good sandwiches/burgers Cons: Noisey; messy; rude bartender more

Good Tavern Food 12/16/2006

I have lived in the West Village all my life. I used to think the Corner Bistro was the best burger in town. I was wrong. The Tavern's burger kicks the Bistro's A*s! The Chickory salad is 1st class too. Go here for good ""grub"" any day of the week. Pros: Great Food Cons: Awkward tabling and sporadic service more

Chicory Salad is Amazing 11/6/2006

The other day someone asked me where to get a good salad downtown. I couldn't really offer a good answer off the top of my head. While there are quite a few restaurants with good salads, none were exceptional enough to recommend. I suddenly remembered the Chicory Salad (with bacon, gorgonzola, and a warm vinaigrette) at Tavern on Jane. I used to go to Tavern years ago but hadn't been in a while and I really remembering really liking that salad. So I went back and pleased that the salad was as good as before. My friend and I also ordered the deep fried oysters, Fish and Chips, and the Cheeseburger. The food was really good along with the service. Sometimes it's nice to see that some things don't change much. Pros: Food Cons: Arrive early on Saturdays more

Best Tavern in NY 9/8/2006

I finally am writing a review after being a regular at the Tavern for years now. It just NEVER disappoints! The ambiance and staff are so welcoming and friendly. I can always go in, have a seat at the bar and have a fun conversation. The food is always fresh, innovative and damn delicious. The brunch kicks butt and includes a drink. more

Tops in the Village 8/27/2006

My favourite spot for a casual stop in the Village. Outstanding value, great service, excellent food. Highly recommended. Pros: ambience, service, value more

Great food in a friendly neighborhood environment 4/6/2006

Ate here last night with a table of 5. Tavern on Jane feels like a pub with locals chatting at the long bar, people squeezing past each other, it's casual and unpretentious. Don't let the pub-like atmosphere put you off - the food is excellent, and everything I tried was delicious. We shared the fried oyster appetizer and Thai spicy shrimp which were both very good. My main was the almond crusted Salmon special with Brussel sprouts and spinach, now this dish was perfect! Prices are well worth the food and if you can tolerate the noise, want somewhere with good service, friendly faces and are hungry don't wait another second. YUM! Pros: food, service Cons: noisy more

""That won't work for us"" 4/3/2006

We had a bonvoyage party for a friend the other evening and she recommended this place. It turns out that a lot of people weren't able to come at trhe same time, so we had so come and some go. At one point, everyone was sitting down in this casual atmosphere on a non-busy monday night and we had one exta person come in... we wanted to join another 2 top table to ours and the manager abruptly said, ""that won't work for us!"" I was surprised since we had been sitting there for an hour buying food and drinks, but we went on an enjoyed ourselves anyhow... for the company only because the burger was dry and the food was so so. Pros: neighborhood place, good drinks, waitress nice Cons: mgr poor service, food ok more

User review by frap 12/23/2005

The place was warm and cozy with very quick service. Don't know what the previous reviewer's remark about ""no fireplace"" was all about since we were seated right in front of a very nice warming fire which added to the ambience. The food was good and so was the wine. Pros: fireplace, quick service Cons: narrow - small, noisy more

Where's the fireplace? 11/25/2005

The food was excellent. The wine list was excellent and the waitress was very helpful in choice that went with each meal. There was no fireplace to cozy up to on the cold friday night that I was there, but that was okay because the quiant restaurant was nice for a first date. Pros: food, wine, ambience Cons: no fireplace more

My favorite spot in the village 10/31/2005

This place is amazing, I live close to it so I make a stop here with friends at least once a week. I am a sucker for their Hanger Steak (always cooked to perfection, never dry) and their Au Grat. Potatos! As said before, it's a beautiful cozy little tavern in a great location and for the food the prices are GREAT. Best spot in the city for casual dining as far as I'm concerned. Pros: Prices, Atmosphere-cozy, great steak more

BURGERS ROCK 3/8/2004

If you're in the mood for a phenomenal burger in a super cozy West Village spot, this is it. I'll take their burgers over those at Corner Bistro - a scant 2 blocks away - any day. I know that's sacrilege to some, but seriously - nice toasted buns, cooked to perfection, amazing bacon, and great fries? What more could you want? More $$ than Corner Bistro, but WAAAAYYYYY better, all around... Pros: Burgers, Bacon, Cozy more

I love this place... 2/25/2004

The staff is superfriendly, as is the neighborhood crowd, and the menu goes well beyond the burgers and fries you would expect from a ""tavern"". They have daily specials (yummy - cobb salad) and some excellent wines along with drafts from the bar. And crayons are provided for the artist in you - more than once I have come away from a meal here with colorful meeting notes taken on the paper tableclothes. Although it gets crowded in a cozy way, and you can usually find a table without any trouble (in the back if you prefer to be away from the bar). If you're into a sterile, cosmopolitan-touting crowd, this might not be the place for you, but if what you want is good food eaten to the nice lull of a happy crowd, get thee to Tavern on Jane. Pros: Close to Subway, Friendly Service, Good Food more
