I love this place! I live close, or I would have never found this little gem. The ambience leaves something to be desired, but who cares when the food is fantastic?! Each dish is fresh and beautiful (carrots are cut to look like flowers)...they even make their own chicken stock for their soups. \r \r I highly recommend the pork won ton soup - totally fresh and completely yummie! The pad thai is out of this world...a hint of sweet and smokey...the same goes for the fried rice. The red curry is absolutely delish! And my entire family can't get enough of their ""special spring rolls"". The hostess/manager is a sweet little thing, and makes each visit a fun experience for my youngest daughter. \r \r If you're looking to impress someone with great tasting food (minus the ambiance) - I highly recommend Taste of Thai off of White Bear Ave and Hwy 94. If you don't mind eating your Thai in a church basement, This is the place for you. The decor is completely lacking in originality and ambiance, but the food and prices are in line, and the variety and speed of service are good. Prices are reasonable for the portion size and very reasonable on additions like drinks and desserts. The Thai Iced Tea is excellent, better than Sawatdees, and only 1.50 as well as the Thai Iced Coffee with Sweet Condensed Milk. Masaman Curry is a bit small in portion but very nice, and the Tom Yuam Soup is very good. Spring Rolls were good but not Excellent. Previous reviews noted a ghosttown when visited, same was noticed with us. No one in there until we were almost done, then one couple came in. It was 7:45 on a Monday night though. Overall this is definitely a place to return to, and as a side note they are on the Fetchers delivery list for dinner. I frequent TOT about once a month. Great food, but the ambeince leaves something to be desired. And, when I say something, I mean a lot. An awful lot. The pad thai is good, the rad na is good, prices aren't too shabby. Hmm, I think I'll go there for lunch today. I've been to this restaurant about 20-30 times in the past year. About half of those times were sit-down experiences, half take-out. Every time, I've gotten the pad thai--I fell in love with it after the first time going there. When I dine in, I usually split the cream cheese puffs with whoever I'm with, which are better than I have had anywhere else. They have a sweet, sugary taste to them, and with the dipping sauce they almost taste like candy. The only downside I've had with the pad thai is that whenever I go anywhere else, if I get pad thai I am severely disappointed. My friends mostly get pad thai as well, although the ones that introduced me to the restaurant have said that the other food they've tried there has been really good as well. The only negative I can really come up with for this place is that when I've gone for lunch, there is one hostess that does all the seating/serving of food. This hasn't been a problem since the place is surprisingly empty every time I've gone. As for takeout, usually they tell me it'll be ready in 10 minutes, and it's always ready when I get there. Let me first preface this review with the fact that I am Thai, I have lived in Thailand, and I frequently return to visit relatives so I know what real Thai food is. I visited Taste of Thailand in hopes of have an authentic experience with Thai food in the Twin Cities. I was sorely disappointed with this place. The restaurant was deserted save for 3 other couples in a building that could easily accommodate 150 people. This was not a promising sign. I looked over the menu and the prices seemed a bit higher than average so I was expecting some higher-than-average quality. My girlfriend and I split the shrimp wrapped in eggroll skins (gung hom pha), she ordered the mango seed stir fry(pad med mamuang, similar to cashew stir fry), and I had the garlic and Thai pepper stir fry with pork(tod kratiem prik thai). The only decent tasting thing was the shrimp and that wasn't even on par with my expectations. My pork was bland and far overpriced at $8.40 for 8 small slices of pork and literally a handful of cilantro on top. This in itself was upsetting. Plus, it was very bland and sweet when it should not have been. My girlfriend's cashew chicken was bland and tasted overly sweet. As for the ambiance, the decorations were stereotypically asian and mostly Chinese. Shortly after sitting down, the other couples left so there was some silence except for my lessons on Thai language to my girlfriend so the server/manager turned on music but it was definitely not Thai. The server/manager spoke Thai with me but later admitted she was from Burma when I inquired about her accent. She said she had lived in Thailand for 24 years and still had a house there. We paid and left after that brief conversation.\r My overall opinion; the prices are far too high for the amount and quality of the food received. Also, it goes to show that even if the person operating a Thai restaurant has lived in Thailand, it's still not guaranteed that they can make the food correctly.
