This place has the best authentic Mexican food! It's super cheap too. Very small place, cash alone, not much atmosphere, but totally worth it for excellent food at a great price. more

CASH ONLY! We had a long day yesterday. My sister was in town for one day and we had to fit as much in as possible, as always. After a trip to Gloucester for bfast (review of Sugar Mags coming soon), a drive to Manchester for an art fest, continuing to Wenham for tea (review also to follow) and Salem for the Culture Fest and a walk around, we were definitely in the mood for a low key evening. A movie and a light dinner were in order. So I hop on the internet to find an ethnic hidden gem that has become the marquee of our sister weekends. Taqueria El Amigo fit the bill. All of the reviews were raves, and it is about two minutes from my house, perfect! We drive down Willow Street, which is pretty much all residential. At the end of the street there is a little white house that is 1/2 a bar and the other half is this piece of Mexican heaven! We walked in, feeling like you are entering abuela's living room. Don't worry, walk in comfortably because inside it is an extremely clean, small dining room. The waitress was very friendly, happy to customize, and happy to give advise. The chips and salsa arrived, fresh out of the fryer. The salsa may be the best I have tasted, but it is not for you if you are sensitive spice. But for me, I would be happy to slather it on everything I own! This was definitely a good sign. The menu is small and easy to navigate. Prices are cheap. You can order ala cart for $2 and up, or order a platter for around $9. Because we had eaten about 82 times already that day, my sister and I decided to get the small tacos (4 small tacos for $5.50). My sister had her 2 as chicken w/ cheese & sour cream. I had my 2 as beef & pork (traditional - avocado, lime, onion & cilantro). The tacos arrive stuffed with meat and looking delicious and fresh. The flour tortillas are perfect, they are the right thickens so as not to leak through, but not dominate the taco. The chicken was fantastic, the pork was out of this world (my recommendation) and the beef was good too. We paid with a $10 bill (AND got change!! When does that EVER happen anymore?!) and were on our way to the movies, calling everyone we know on the way to tell them about this amazing hidden gem we were so lucky to have found! If you are looking for great Mexican food this is the place to go. The name of the restaurant in phone books is under Taquiera El Meriachi. There about 5 tables inn this hole of a wall place. The food is freshly made! Salsa is soooooo spicy, but you can't get enough of it! Chicken enchiladas, rice and beans, and carne asada tacos are my favorite! Very friendly! Highly recommend this place.... I think it's better than Taquiera Mexico(another hole in the wall authentic Mexican restaurant in Waltham).
